Altered Farmhouse Provokes Rustic And Modern To Collaborate Posted: 18 Jul 2012 04:59 AM PDT Building over an original rustic farmhouse surrounded by a serene rural landscape and adding a modern touch to this residential building caught in between eras, the creative team of Invisible Studio re-imagined the details of the 2,368 square feet Starfall Farm. Located in Bath and North East Somerset, UK, this interesting residence took shape from the remains of an old farmhouse altered to be suited for a contemporary lifestyle, but keeping its charming country side intact. The challenges defined this project, guiding the team towards transforming the “hideously extended, but originally very pretty farmhouse in St Catherine's valley” into a welcoming mixture of rustic and modern styles. An extension made mostly of materials from the demolished barns allows owners Xa Sturgis and Anna Benn to enjoy more of the landscape than they would have before this extensive renovation. The designer shares his inspiration: “At the time, I was rather obsessed by the rawness in Sandy Wilson's Scroope Terrace extension in Cambridge in which I was working – I love all the concrete benches and so on in that building. Starfall has a very simple asymmetric section that allows the morning light to penetrate deep into the building and flood it with light. For me, the project was also a way of reconciling all the thermal deficiencies of Moonshine, which is far too lightweight – Starfall is ruthlessly thermally massive, and with it incredibly efficient. As ever, Kris Eley helped me reconcile all that, Tinyue Liu drew it beautifully and Structures 1 engineered it effortlessly. Thanks again to Peter Clegg for recommending me for the project.” You're reading Altered Farmhouse Provokes Rustic And Modern To Collaborate originally posted on Freshome. Versatile TOAD Side Table Exploring New Forms of Stability by Philipp Beisheim Posted: 18 Jul 2012 03:52 AM PDT We received photos and information about a creative furniture project entitled TOAD side table, developed by Philipp Beisheim, an artist currently living in Germany. The designer told us that his aim is not to try to solve problems, it is much more about creating new situations, that simplifies a discussion by bringing in a new context. During the design process a number of difficulties will come along, and the challenge is to solve these in a well-considered and creative way. An object needs to be designed to mean something to those who use it, so that the owner or user can develop a special bond with it over the years, placed into a contemporary context. The Outcome is frequently experimental in its use of materials and often inspired by pure need and relies more on invention and reduction than on the refinement of previous styles. TOAD side table is an exploration in creating new forms by adding stability to an object. A single table segment cannot stand independently; it has to be connected with at least two other segments to create a stable playful configuration. This was one of the most important factors in determining the form of the table. TOAD is made from solid ash and the top is lacquered. This versatile side table with its elegant details is designed to be used in various environments serving well next to a sofa. New Virtual-Holographic Display Tool for Designers and Architects: zSpace [Video] Posted: 18 Jul 2012 02:42 AM PDT Professionals in the creative industry and hi-tech enthusiasts will likely be intrigued by the new zSpace display envisioned and implemented by Infinite z. The virtual-holographic experience has a futuristic vibe to it and reinvents the computer interface as we know it. According to the developers, zSpace is aimed at unleashing the full potential of human creativity: “by blending the physical world with a sensory-rich virtual world that people can naturally and intuitively manipulate and navigate, we significantly advance the way we solve problems, learn, teach, communicate and create our world. zSpace is a revolutionary, immerse, interactive 3D environment for computing, creating, communication and entertainment“. The device ensures that the user has a clear 3D experience, with objects appearing in open space in full color and high resolution. With the help of passive polarized lenses (similar to the 3D glasses you wear in movie theaters) and head tracking, interacting is made easy: “The multi sensory platform provides a highly realistic way to view, manipulate, and communicate complex ideas through direct interaction with zSpace virtual-holographic simulations. They appear realistically solid and can be directly manipulated by using a stylus as if they were actual physical objects.” According to Fast Co. Design, the product resembles a a super-sized tablet with a 24-inch 3D display. Have a look at the short video below for a better understanding of the project and tell us if you believe zSpace will easily integrate in the world of design and architecture. Hammock and Chaise Longue Combined: The Luxurious La Seóra Posted: 18 Jul 2012 12:25 AM PDT La Seóra hammock was inspired by two significant cultures in the city of Miami; the Cubans and the Americans. A general image of an American armchair is one of those huge ones, with the plush padding, the foot rest folding up, and the drink holder on your side, then we have the typical Cuban hammock. The result is La Seora; a hybrid between a hammock a chaise-long and an armchair. Made from high quality Birch marine plywood and assembled with stainless steel fixings, the plywood beams prevent your back from slouching and relieves back strain, a common problem found in conventional hammocks made of fabric or net. As a result this unique assembly is extremely ergonomic and comfortable providing a unique relaxing experience. Integrated armrests open when needed and the lower footrest can be adjusted according to your height for supreme comfort. Seora’s distinctive stand made from stainless steel can be quickly disassembled into three pieces for easy storage. In addition there are several accessories (all made from leading outdoor Sunbrella fabrics) which can be added to enhance your Seóra experience; a pillow for added head comfort and a side pocket to keep hold of your essential magazines, sunglasses and iPad. Bold Design Concept At Dada Architecture + Design’s New Headquarters Posted: 17 Jul 2012 10:07 AM PDT A fruitful collaboration between Italian company Fabbian Illuminazione and Dada Architecture + Design resulted in a fascinating retail space for the latter. The architecture studio’s Switzerland headquarters was brightly lit by a selection of beautiful, elegant lamps that compose a unique atmosphere, aimed at developing the new distribution and representation concept the brand has in mind. Working on this project, architect Davide D’Agostino was able to “create an organization in which the operative and exhibitive components blend together and produce a unitary message.” The studio’s design philosophy now resides in a carefully constructed space, where objects, furnishings, sculptures and complete settings join visual and tactile forces to inspire the client when choosing the desired design path: “By visiting these spaces, already-acquired and potential clients thus have the chance to come into contact with a new form of communication, that which architect D’Agostino calls "Planning within the Project". The bottom line is that the clients manage to develop their own projects, stimulated and inspired by the environment in which they find themselves. Fabbian plays lead role in lighting up this project: notice the Crio Bianca suspension lamp above the PC stations, the rectangular Sospesa lamp above the meeting table, a series of Giunco floor lamps creating a highly suggestive effect in the luxury bathroom setting, the Angle floor lamp and two Elle lamps lighting up the country chic lounge, further enhanced by a Tile lamp. A series of Cubetto suspension lamps light up the corridor and the pictures decorating it. The Cricket spotlights and the Slot light fitting complete the lighting of the large study.” You're reading Bold Design Concept At Dada Architecture + Design’s New Headquarters originally posted on Freshome.
