Garage Turned Into An Airy Urban Residence On Two Floors Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:42 AM PDT This transformation of an old garage into a very stylish contemporary residence took place under the attentive supervision of Italian studio Ego Vitamina Creativa. The duplex apartment is located in a city in northern Italy, named Cuneo and bares the name Casa LD. Distributed on two floors connected by a sculptural staircase, the public and private spaces are linked through design and color palette. A bright, elegant downstairs living/dining/cooking area seems to be separated by a wide column pierced by a transparent fireplace, but the fluid spaces appear strongly connected. Wooden floors reflect in the wodden ceiling, displaying the same longitudinal design that seems to elongate rays of natural light coming through glass doors and windows. Ego Vitamina Creativa imagined a living space where design lines intertwine to shape a dark wooden piece of furniture running alongside the wall opposite the kitchen. This versatile construction acts as a storage space and supports the folded, painted and perforated metal staircase railing leading to the upstairs bedroom. This unique feature completes the apartment’s design and the floor plan proves that careful space arrangement also needs a focal point to create an interesting interior design. Eclectic Greek Island Retreat For Authentic Experiences Posted: 25 Jun 2012 05:20 AM PDT Based on the concept of providing the authentic Greek experience everyone is looking for, the San Giorgio Hotel on the island of Mykonos overlooks scenic panoramas of the Aegean Sea, captured from the property located between Paradise and Paranga beaches. This luxurious Mykonos hotel encompasses 34 rooms, all created to welcome guests with their own charm. Travelers can choose between five types of rooms, measuring 25 and 55 square meters, while the spectacular pool and decking on the cliffs edge, alongside the seashore sun deck, introduces the Cycladic environment. The “bohemian 60s meets Gypsy style” atmosphere was created by Berlin-based architectural studio Lambs & Lions with a few basic but important things in mind – guests are welcomed with a heat-repelling pure white architecture softened with the use of stone, given the possibility of either socializing with fellow travelers or enjoying interrupted private experiences alongside Greek surroundings and respected with an eclectic choice of accents. Its duality – both encouraging interaction between guests and offering the comfort of a private retreat – makes this island retreat a perfect spot for a carefree vacation. Hiding Clutter Behind Book Spines : Modern Library Storage Bin Posted: 25 Jun 2012 03:54 AM PDT Californian studio Able + Baker (A+B) imagined an idea that can hide clutter while giving the impression of displaying different book spines. The Modern Library Storage Bin constructs a design adapted to library shelves that serves the purpose of stylishly storing CDs and DVDs, pieces of papers, pens, magazines, you name it – as long as they fit in the 12″ x 12″ x 8″ format. These wooden boxes were adorned with repurposed library books, easy to integrate into a library or bookshelf, between your own real books. Designers say that the Modern Library Storage Bin fits great with the Ikea Expedit bookcase, but these fun and creative wooden storage boxes can be showcased on any shelf, any bookcase they fit in or even be left out on the table. These book spine-displaying boxes can also come with drawer hardware and they are hand crafted from ply maple. Each of the bins are unique – books are carefully chosen and artfully displayed to become part of the storage compartments. Compact Notting Hill Mews House Re-Imagined For A Modern Lifestyle Posted: 25 Jun 2012 02:33 AM PDT London-based studio Paper Project Architecture and Design completed rebuilding a fantastic property this year. Entitled the Notting Hill House, this stylishly colorful mews house was re-imagined to offer more space and convey a sense of comfortable modernity. The original house was enlarged with two additional levels that shape the basement kitchen and top floor master bedroom suite, doubling the floor plan. Located close to Kensington Gardens, the three bedroom house was opened to natural light through fantastic features – floating glass stairs create a lightwell from the top floor large skylight, allowing indirect natural light to flood the whole structure, from top to bottom. The basement kitchen features a German manufactured kitchen and one of its walls is adorned with a mirroring set of words that surprise the bold color palette – dark furniture punctured by green artwork and green chairs around a glass-topped table, all set on a white background. Exposing beautiful wide plank Danish wood flooring throughout and benefiting from underfloor heating, the interiors display a modern connection between floors and spaces, creating an open floor-plan spread on four levels. Compact and brightly lit, this impressive residence was designed with attention to details, summing up to a stylish collection of spaces, currently on sale. Valley Residence In Rural Canada Topping A Narrow Ridge Posted: 25 Jun 2012 01:17 AM PDT Located in a valley of rural Canada, this exemplary residence was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the same architect that worked on the Port Townsend Residence in Washington. The modern rural house spreads over 6,300 square meters along the crest of a narrow ridge, hence its name – the Ridge House. Prepared to be both a social and a solitary space, the modern house invites sunlight in, but protects the interiors from too much sun with the help of large overhangs across its single sloped roof. Defined by the surrounding presence of an evergreen and hardwood forest, this quiet retreat is described by the architects: “After entering the site through a thick grove of evergreens, the drive turns to reveal the first glimpse of the home— a long, linear core of cut stone sliding under a single slope roof and through a delicate glass volume. The stone core, punctuated by two large fireplace masses, organizes the spaces, with primary circulation along the south face of the stone. Gaps in the stone core provide access to each of the living spaces, while the core itself houses bathrooms, closets and other support spaces. Anchored to the south by the stone mass, the living spaces extend north onto a wood deck overlooking the steep slope with tall walls of glass blurring the boundary between inside and out.” The north and west-facing master suite also provokes the senses with its proximity to nature. In fact, all spaces are carefully designed to maximize the exposure to views and natural light, making this home a dreamy residential building.
