Molly Hatch 3 Original and Captivating Plate Paintings by Molly Hatch

Ceramics artist Molly Hatch recently presented her latest plate paintings at Sofa New York 2012, on behalf of Ferrin Gallery. Her projects are “based on historic source imagery from the print and drawing departments of the MFA Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC“. Each composition is captivating and fun to decrypt. If you look carefully at the photos, you will observe how every plate is thoroughly and elegantly worked on, and how it acts as an artful puzzle piece for the entire “painting”. We decided to feature Molly’s work on Freshome, as a tribute to her original idea and talent. Located in a small village near Girona, Spain, that also lend its name, the House in Casavells is a terraced house on a long and narrow plot. Girona-based architecture  studio 05 AM Arquitectura designed the interiors taking into account the specific needs of the family and the opportunities of the plot. A sunken level in the middle of the ground floor ensures a continuous connection to the outdoor spaces and natural light comes from windows on different levels of the house, flooding the dark interiors through dark-framed windows and sliding doors.

The ground floor garage is more than just a place to keep the family car – this room acts as a transitional space that can be used in many ways. The level occupied by the library and office space was adorned with bleachers, constructing a logical transition to the upper dining and cooking space. Here, at the main floor level, the kitchen, living space and terrace are interrupted by the passage from the lower floor, while the entrance from the street opens to the north. Then there are the bedrooms, simple resting spaces in perfect harmony with the rest of the house. After looking at the photos, you will comprehend the fascinating solutions that made this house a modern residence.

Munich chair 1 Elegant Chair Especially Designed for Museum Brandhorst in Munich

With an appearance that is elegant and sober, the Munich Chair is perfectly suited for a business office, or a sophisticated indoor study room. Designed by Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton for Classicon, the chair is a result of a commission for the Museum Brandhorst in Munich. Asked to develop a piece that would be integrated in such a prestigious institution, the designers created three different seating units. In time, these designs were used for the cafeteria, the lounge, the conference and lecture rooms, as free-standing, comfortable furniture pieces. Employing a steel frame and solid wood, the designers envisioned a long-lasting chair concept. The Munich Chair is also available in a lime green color (last photo of the post, as seen on Chair Blog), by Berlin Architects Sauerbruch Hutton. When commissioned to build a new lecture hall for the Technical University Munich, Germany, architects Deubzer König & Rimmel Architekten came up with a creative and visually appealing solution. This undulating modern building is a result of a 9-month planning and building period, on a budget estimated at just 60% of regular building costs. According to the architects, “the almost square building contains two lecture halls with 479 and 288 seats. They are separated by a corridor which provides the access for handicapped people and the speaker. The foyer, the bathrooms and the technical facilities are situated below the seating. The main accesses for the lecture halls are the two staircases and the first floor corridor“. The most striking element of this project is the black, undulating facade, built with rough cut spruce planks and added an interesting visual effect when exposed to natural light. Stealth Barn is a new project by London-based studio Carl Turner Architects that was constructed near one of their other modern projects – the Ochre Barn – and complement the simple residential brick construction it stands by. The Norfolk countryside was the perfect place to experiment with the construction of two equally interesting projects and we will concentrate on the Stealth Barn, which was designed to be used either as a guest house, studio or meeting place. “Stealth Barn pays respect to the form of the agricultural context but contrasts with the traditional barn.

Stealth Barn is a sharp black mass – a shadow of the adjacent barn or a silhouette on the horizon. It is a robust exterior wrapped with a restricted palette, devoid of fussy detail, and formed to withstand its exposed position.” Interiors were dressed in OSB, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of old barns divided by straw bales. Compartmentalized interiors were given the chance to visually connect to the surrounding landscape through carefully placed windows. Pocket-like spaces convey the idea of a semi-open, welcoming space that can easily be used as a bedroom, dining space, office zone and meeting room without interfering with one another.
