Inviting Home in Australia Cleverly Combining Traditional and Modern Features Posted: 13 Apr 2012 06:19 AM PDT Christopher Polly Architect designed the Elliott Ripper House, an inviting residence happily combining modern features with warm, rustic touches. Located in Rozelle, Sydney, Australia, this 161 square meter home displays a charming weatherboard cladding profile, large glass doors and pivoting windows allowing various degrees of openness: “The project simply and directly extrapolates existing formal qualities in plan and section, with extension of key existing materials and finishes to retain some memory of its previous incarnation – while providing a significantly expanded series of connected interior volumes that harness access to sunlight, ventilation and views of tree canopies, sky and district beyond“. The ground floor accommodates an open plan kitchen, dining and living volume, while the upper level hosts the private areas. The two previously unrelated floors are currently connected by a wooden staircase, enhancing the overall feeling of warmth inspired by this unusual contemporary home. Opening Up Towards Relaxing Surroundings: Harborview Hills Residence Posted: 13 Apr 2012 12:31 AM PDT Laidlaw Schultz Architects have completed Harborview Hills, a contemporary residence located in Corona del Mar, California, USA. With imposing white walls contrasting the warm color palette of the chosen materials, the house ranks high in elegance and modernism. Here is more from the official press release: “Bordering the street, the entry facade is a solid wall with walnut striations, concealing any indication of the coastal views which are accessible from the interior of the home. inhabitants pass a woven steel panel, denoting the axial division between private and public, entering an internal courtyard which can be integrated into the home’s interior rooms by opening a line of sliding doors. The dwelling is then transformed into an outdoor pavilion, introducing the exterior fireplace and pool into the ground level circulation“. Lake House in Portugal Paying Tribute to Modern Architecture Posted: 12 Apr 2012 09:40 AM PDT Frederico Valsassina Architects designed a lake house in Aroeira, Portugal. The residence displays a modern architecture, consisting of volumes with different functions and emphasizing the indoor/ outdoor interaction: “We wanted a home that understands the autonomy of different spatialities – social / private, day / night – with the creation of a terrace adjacent to the pool. Taking advantage of the conditions of deployment of the lot, both in terms of topography and its limits, the position of the villa emphasizes the creation of dominant visual axis in the direction of the immediate surroundings of the lake. Indeed, the service areas protect strategically, social areas, occupying the most disadvantaged local deployment. Investing in the gradual transition between the inside and outside, the terrace is assumed as a natural extension of the living area, promoting ongoing dialog with the environment and flexibility in the proposed appropriation of different spaces“.
