Soft Handmade Rugs Inspired by Nature from Kia Design Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:15 AM PDT We received photos and information about a rug collection launched by Kia Design. Here is the press release we were sent: “Our rugs are handmade exceptional works of art created with great patience, every single knot is tied by hand with 100 knots – this means that in every square meter there will be 100,000 knots! They are made from New Zealand wool and Chinese silk. Many of our rugs are inspired by nature and it is only right that they be made from natural products. The wool in our rugs makes them not only resilient but also hypo-allergenic, insulating and soft to touch. The silk adds a beautiful lustre to the designs as well as a super soft texture that makes you want to touch it time and time again”. Have a look at the patterns below and tell us which one would best fit your home. You're reading Soft Handmade Rugs Inspired by Nature from Kia Design originally posted on Freshome. Splitting Furniture Revealing Double Use – Within Seating/Side Table Posted: 05 Apr 2012 12:23 AM PDT There is no reason to fill up our homes with useless furniture and items that will soon fill up out storage spaces. Instead, we should keep an eye out for versatile furniture that uplifts our spirit with a carefully designed and studied body. Part of this type of furniture, the Within seating and side-table looks like two white boxes, but once you interact with it, it seems to blossom into an interesting prism-like design hidden by the adjoining of its two sides. The idea came from Stockholm-based Studio Vision, who designed the seating unit/side-table as an easily adaptable furniture item with double use. This is how the designer describe the limited edition piece: “I have strove to create a very "engineered" or constructed look of the ash structure by using few straight lines and arranging the grain direction of the wood to increase the perception of depth.” Displaying an ash interior structure and a white exterior, the Within seating/side-table puts form and function on the same level, creating a contemporary piece of furniture. Wood And Concrete Hillside Maruyama House In Japan Posted: 04 Apr 2012 07:13 AM PDT Overlooking the city of Sapporo, Japan, this simple residential construction gathers views from all directions and draws them inside, through massive floor-to-ceiling windows. Surrounding vegetation and the house’s hillside location ensures the dwellers privacy is protected and they can become “victims” of a comfortable lifestyle. Designed by Japanese studio Atelier Sano, the residence bearing the name Maruyama House displays a clean, wood-cladded architecture style resting on a concrete base. In order to keep the interior spaces open and simple, the architects designed a series of nooks that shelter different programs without interfering with the open floor plan. Reached via a twisted staircase, the main living space contains the kitchen, dining space, living room and office corner. A kitchen island flanked by open shelves on two sides and wooden dining table and chairs compose the cooking/dining area, having only the subtle furniture arrangement visually separating them from the living zone. The rest of the space is divided between the necessary programs and a freeing sense of openness both on the inside and towards the surrounding landscape. Are you inspired by this residence or prefer a more classic approach to interior design and architecture?
