Striking House Make-Over in South Africa: Mosi Residence

When asked to completely turn around the appearance of a 1950′s home, Nico van der Meulen Architects came up with a highly contemporary solution. Following the clients’ brief, to create a home with an urban feel, the architecture company redesigned Mosi Residence, turning it into a continuous four-bedroom space with plenty of entertaining areas. According to the official project description, “the single-story building allows for large double volume spaces and flat roofs have been used in the alteration to keep vertical expansion in mind for the client's future. As a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. To enter the private areas of the home, one must cross a bridge above a new internal water feature which breaks the public and private spaces, separating the entrance hall and study from the private home. In keeping with the owner's brief to have a home with an urban and open feel, the interior and exterior entertaining areas have been blurred by sliding stacking doors that open up the whole facade“. Be sure to have a look at the “before” photos at the end of the post, for a better understanding of the project and tell us what you think of the differences.

Black And Red Residence In Concrete And Wood

Black Red Residence Black And Red Residence In Concrete And Wood

Proof that modern residences can be both imposing and comfortable, the Black & Red Residence rises in Jose Ignacio, Punta del este, Uruguay. Its 340 square meters of bold interior spaces were designed to make the life of a family with kids of different ages easy, comfortable and inspiring. The residential project, completed by Martin Gomez Arquitectos in 2009, shows that the architects customized the residence according to the needs of each family member  and the result was a three independent volume structure connected by a concrete galleria leading to the backside wooden deck and swimming pool.

The fantastic villa features interiors adorned with dark wooden ceilings that continue on the outside, where round skylights allow the sunshine to pierce through. Two concrete fireplaces in the connecting galleria ensure family and friends can cook or relax in front of the fire. This common semi-outdoor space gathers the family together, while the other spaces keep them relaxed, rested and entertained – master bedroom and bath, living room, kitchen, kids bedrooms with baths and the playroom. During summer, natural light plays with the black and red wood and contrasting concrete, flooding the spaces with light and shadow and making the interiors display different faces during the day. If you are interested in finding more about the architect’s work, the book “Martin Gomez: Punta del Este. Beach Houses” is available to pre-order from here and here.

ParedesPino Arquitectos sent us some photos and information regarding a creative project they recently designed. Here is the press release we were sent:” redo-me is the result of a precise and innovative design that responds to an existing need: the variability and transformability of furniture over its lifetime with the same pieces. The system consists of three different pieces, grouped in S, M or L kits, that can be mounted in many different configurations. Parts are assembled without any glue, using a extensible rod system that allows any number of mounting and dismounting cycles.

A convertible furniture that can be expanded, divided, extended or reconfigured. Just sort the pieces in a different way to get a new piece of furniture. A furniture system that fits your needs, produced in transparent or translucent Plexiglas and birch plywood finished with high pressure laminates. Redo-me is composed of versatile pieces that offer endless possibilities. Many are already listed on the website of the product, but there are many others yet to discover. It is therefore an open project, which encourages its users to discover new mounting configurations”. Take a look at the video below for more assembling ideas and tell us if you find this project as appealing as we do.

Stunning New York Urban Retreat With a Glamorous Past [Video]

New York Urban Retreat Stunning New York Urban Retreat With a Glamorous Past [Video]

Paul Rudolph designed a stunning New York Urban Retreat at 101 East 63rd Street and now we can draw inspiration from the interiors and details of the magnificent residential structure. Redesigned in the 1960s by talented architect Paul Rudolph, this 19th-century carriage house in Manhattan's Upper East Side in New York City received a new modern skin in the shape of a four story steel and glass modern residence. Architect’s Rudolph design remained mostly intact during all these years, with a few changes done by the last inhabitant, German-born industrialist and photographer Gunter Sachs: the wall-to-wall carpeting transformed into white-oak floors and the mezzanine and catwalk were given beautiful balustrades. Having had a glamorous past, with parties thrown by its owner at that time – well-known clothing designer Halston – and attended by famous people like Sean Connery, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger and so on, the fantastic residence is now offered by Corcoran Group at $38.5 million and it will sure find an owner very fast.

Small Bohemian Week-end Retreat : Shack at Hinkle Farm

Hinkle Farm Shack 2 Small Bohemian Week end Retreat : Shack at Hinkle Farm

Designed by Broadhurst Architects as a week-end retreat for a family in Washington D.C, the Shack at Hinkle Farm provides peacefulness and relaxation. Here is an excerpt of the official project description provided by the architects: “The shack was created as a logical step between tent camping, and the yet unrealized weekend cottage. This fundamental shelter has no electricity. Oil lamps provide light. Heat is provided by a small wood stove, which is also used to heat water that is delivered to the "kitchen" sink by a gravity system. The vertical drop is achieved by using a hand-powered bilge pump to fill an overhead storage tank. Rain water is collected from the roof as part of the outdoor shower system. Acknowledging the constant struggle between mouse (and occasionally rattlesnake and bear) and man, the shack sits upon four wood posts with rodent barriers, a detail borrowed from local corn cribs. The board and batten siding is locally milled pine“. Would you consider living in a home without electricity and surrounded by nothing but trees and pastures?

Surprising Duality Captured In Michael Haverland’s Waterfront House

Waterfront House by Michael Haverland Surprising Duality Captured In Michael Haverlands Waterfront HouseResting on a five acre property, this fantastic residence displays two contrasting facades – a privacy-protecting front view composed of two volumes resting on a smaller wooden volume and a fully glazed south facade mirroring its 14 feet high steel and glass windows and stucco piers in the nearby pool. Part of architect Michael Haverland‘s portfolio, the residence named Waterfront House is located in East Hampton, New York. Concrete walls with interesting computer-generated vertical and horizontal patterns acting as rain-screens adorn the unique facade.

These hand cast panels are made from sand from the site, further deepening the connection between the built residence and its surroundings. The residence is described by Michael Haverland as follows: “From the initial approach, this house appears to be two opaque volumes. Once closer, an elevated courtyard is revealed, and a gap between two rectangular volumes exposes the steel and glass entry. The gradual sequence from grade to to the front door leads to the second floor where the main spaces are elevated to capture water and sky views.” Isn’t the use of patterned panels an amazing solution to beautifying an opaque facade?
