| Dream Home In Sweden Through a Photographer’s Eyes Posted: 17 Feb 2012 05:48 AM PST
Swedish photographer Bruno Basic sent us a set of wonderful photos of a contemporary home he photographed in Sweden. This is the story behind the inspiration and a few details about the materials and owner: “In 2011, I had the honor to photograph a house that was “modern” as my clients described it. What I saw at the driveway to the house I noticed that this house was a little different than regular houses that I see around me. This was more square and appeared to be incredibly well designed. I had never been in contact or met the owner of the house and honestly, I thought it lived a young design-interested couple there. But I was wrong. The house was owned by a middle-aged businessman who had exquisite taste for design. He had designed the house himself and was very proud of it. The house has magnificent view over the city of Kalmar and the sea that surrounds it. Everything in the house was exclusive and the materials came from local producers. The floor was made only a few miles away. I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I do.” We did enjoy them, how about you?

| How to Build Original Faceted Vessels: FACETURE Series by Phill Cutance [Video] Posted: 17 Feb 2012 04:47 AM PST
We ran across an interesting series of handmade faceted vessels and light-shades on Core77, that captured our attention. Created by Phil Cuttance, by using a relatively simple, but original technique, the designs in the FACETURE Series stand out due to their odd shape.According to the designer, each piece is unique, and has a special number at the bottom to mark this fact. Here is the process of production, as described by Phil: “First the mould of the object is hand-made by scoring and cutting a sheet of 0.5mm plastic sheet. This sheet is then folded, cut and taped into the overall shape of the product that is to be cast. The mould’s final shape, and strength, is dictated by which triangular facets I pop in and out. I then mix a water-based casting resin that is cast in the mould where it sets solid. The material soon sets creating a hollow solid object“. And if you need further help understanding the process, just check out the video below! [Images by Petr Krejci]

| Modern Home in Spain with Fantastic Sea Views: Punta Brava 2 Residence Posted: 17 Feb 2012 02:21 AM PST
The Punta Brava 2 Residence was designed by Barcelona-based studio DNA Barcelona Architectsand is located in Costa Brava, Catalonia, Spain. The imposing 5,636 square foot home overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and was especially design to balance intimacy and openness towards nature. According to the architects, the location of this residence was determined by the “slope of the plot, providing a home to two levels with terrace and gardens that surround it, establishing a direct link between the interior and exterior at all times. Therefore it is decided to locate the house on the highest point of land, to ensure the views, while the pool and garden are at the bottom. At the top level are the entrances to the house and common areas like living room, kitchen and sun terrace. At the main entrance is accessed from the street above, either by car or on foot, through a majestic path across the garden. The distribution of this top volume is designed to ensure the enjoyment of the terrace with fantastic sea views and sunsets”. Can you tell us your overall opinion regarding the architecture and design of this project?

| Prototype Prefab Home In The Californian Desert Posted: 16 Feb 2012 11:45 PM PST
Desert houses can benefit from many features – plenty of sunlight, beautiful scapes or the promise of blissful isolation. This particular Desert House built in Desert Hot Springs, California interacts with the arid grounds and playfully seems to integrate the surroundings in its modern architecture. Designed by Los Angeles-based architecture firm Marmol Radziner, the fascinating oasis of modern human lifestyle sits on a five acre property and overlooks San Jacinto peak and the surrounding mountains. With a 2,000 square feet floor plan doubled by the covered exterior spaces, the Desert House ensures plenty of well-lit, beautifully designed interior space seamlessly connected to the outdoors.
I bet that this extraordinary residence makes the owner feel part of the desert while offering comfort and relaxation. An L-shaped floor plan shaped a protective area, where the swimming pool and inviting fire pit offer two incredible elements for days and nights to remember. The North wing is reserved for a guest house and an art studio, taking social entertaining to a new level. The Desert House is actually a prototype prefab home – looking forward to more projects like this one.

| Two Modern Villas Hidden by a single Facade: MIKI 1 House Posted: 16 Feb 2012 09:05 AM PST
MIKI 1 House was designed by Alexander Brenner Architects and is located in Stuttgart, Germany. Even though the project appears to be a single villa, behind the facade there are two individual homes, with two different layouts, according to the needs of the inhabitants. Here is more from the architects: “While the villas have almost the same floor area, the western half of the duplex has a multi-room plan suitable for a family, whereas the eastern half was designed with an open, flowing room concept. The generous stairs with twelve steps leads from the road to the en-trance level. The entrances are invisibly integrated into the surface structure of the ground floor. Additionally, the eastern half of the duplex offers direct access via the garage.
For the spacious two-storey room on the ground floor the architect designed a detached concrete kitchen counter and a dining table, whose concrete base supports a seemingly hovering timber tabletop, which is illuminated from below. The living area, the lounge zone and the work-space on the gallery are flooded with light entering through the glass facade on the south side, facing the view“. Have a look at the architecture plans at the end of the post for a better understanding of the project and tell us what you think.
