Overlooking Paddy Fields in Bali: Kayu Aga House

Kayu Aga House by Yoka Sara Overlooking Paddy Fields in Bali: Kayu Aga House

Located in Canggu, Bali, a small community where anyone can enjoy the tranquil Balinese village life, the Kayu Aga House was designed by Indonesian architect Yoka Sara. Pastoral surroundings make the location of this exceptional home better connect to the basic life, but gives the inhabitants the comfort of living in a contemporary residence. Designed for Italian businessman Alberto Agazzi, the house was shaped as a four cornered structure, with three orthogonal sleeping pavilions – each with private garden courts and outdoor bathrooms – and a carport shaping the floor plan. Living and dining spaces are sheltered in the central two-story pavilion, above which an elevated studio and a roof garden seem to be floating. A semi-circular terrace reached via a modern oval bamboo/metal staircase rests on top of the pond adorned with simple white columns. Displaying an architecture harmonious with nature, the Kayu Aga House is shaped out of a series of curved walls and placed facing views to the east of paddy fields and beautiful sunrises.

Freshwater House Australian Beach Freshwater House With Amazing Details

Designed by Australian architecture studio Chenchow Little , this residential project named Freshwater House spreads over 3,000 square feet divided into two floors. Unique volumes separated into a podium base, a garden and living space, and a bedroom volume make up the main characteristics of this contemporary Sydney home. The entry vestibule and garage on the basement floor are integrated in the natural topography of the site, while the social spaces were placed on top of the podium, allowing the interiors to be exposed to the surrounding views through many glass doors and walls.

Beautiful views of the beach below can be enjoyed from this floor and the next one, where the bedrooms are located. The architects explain how the operable shutters on the bedroom volume protect the inhabitant’s privacy and help define the overall design: “The top bedroom level floats above the landscaped living level and is veiled with custom- made external bi-folding shutters anodised dark bronze. The shutters are constructed of vertical battens to maintain views to the beach below. The shutters provide privacy, enclosure and dappled light to this level. The detailing of the shutters is purposefully simple such that the building reads as an abstract sculptural form in the landscape when viewed from the beach. When the shutters are open the appearance of the building, and the experience of the interior, transforms. The client’s occupation of the dwelling registers in the operable facade of the building.”

Mangas Rugs & Pouffs Designed by Patricia Urquiola for GAN Rugs

Designed by Spanish architect and product designer Patricia Urquiola for Gan Rugs, the Mangas Collection features rugs, runners and pouffs made from 100% wool and hand made in India. The products are made from a patchwork of different design wool knits which create unique textured designs in different complementary colour ways and sizes.

We recently wrote about the trend for knitting in interior design and these products would fit in with this trend perfectly. The big chunky knits are perfect for lazing about in front of the fire on a cozy winter evening. Don’t you think?

Indoor Intimacy Achieved in an Original Fashion by Alain Gilles

We recently received a press release presenting three interesting designs that can bring personality to an office or trendy loft. The projects were created by Alain Gilles for Buzzispace. The works will be on display at the  "Maison & Objet" fair in Paris. Here is the information we were sent:

BUZZIHOOD. This project is all about personal privacy and well-being. It is about being able to quickly protect yourself from the surrounding world…. from a wild bunch of kids playing in your loft to a host of colleges sharing the same open space office…  to make some private calls. The idea is to feel protected, but not isolated. You regain that too-often-lost privacy associated with the use of mobile phones but you never the less remain in touch with those surrounding you. You do not have to share your private conversations with everyone else and then again in some case you also do not "bother" everyone while on the phone. The concept is of course also reminiscent of those now fast-despairing open phone booth  that use to be a common site in our cities, airports and hotel lobbies…  It has been designed in order to be very graphic and architectural.

The BuzzHub Single is a more private shelter than its larger brother.  It this case, the idea is really to be able to work by oneself and to concentrate on what matters and get the job done ! It was designed to feel comfortable but never-the-less to be in a position favouring a working attitude and concentration. Hence, for instance, the large cushion on the side that doubles as armrest is fairly stiff so that it can serve as support for the arm when typing on the computer and using one of the BuzziTables. Two BuzziHub Singles could also be used face to face when to people want to share ideas. It can also be used with an extra long side panel that will serve as an extra shield and offer an enhanced privacy and well being.

BUZZIBOOTH. This is a micro-architecture project.  It is all about recreating some privacy in a common noisy, wide, or crowded space.  In today's world we have torn down most of our walls:  we live in loft-like apartments and work in open-space offices. Nevertheless, we still sometimes very much need to enjoy the comfort of some privacy. We still have to make phone calls that other people are not supposed to hear about. But we might also need to focus on our work and have to find a place where we can retrieve with our notebook for a few minutes our hours. This is very much a new type of product addressing the problems and needs of today.  This is an acoustical cocoon made of fabric in order to absorb the surrounding noise as much as possible ( it is made out of recycled fabric ). Then again, it is a very obvious and reassuring product since typologically it is very close to some very common products such as the public phone booth that has now vastly disappeared from our streets, or the typical small-wooden beach hut that tends to be a small world of its own once opened up and customized by its owner.

Combining Dark Volumes And Farm-Like Architecture: House DS

House DS by Graux Baeyens Architecten Combining Dark Volumes And Farm Like Architecture: House DS

Completed just last year, in 2011, the House DS residential project is part of Graux & Baeyens Architecten‘s portfolio. Located in a residential area of Destelbergen, Belgium, the property on which House DS rests was purchased 10 years ago, but it was only not long ago the owner decided to transform the house into a contemporary living space with the help of the talented team of architects. With the property measuring 1,071 square meters, the construction was built to have 312 square meters of interior spaces. The farm-resembling home almost got demolished, but the architects convinced the owner to revamp the old construction and add an extension that would not only enlarge the space, but also create a seamless connection between the old house and the new, refined construction. Five volumes were added, four of which were placed in the backside of the house, as a continuation of the architecture, while the fifth acts as the pool house. The large garden connects all the volumes, merging them into a fantastic property prepared to offer its owner the best of both worlds.

Hollow Restaurant Flower Inspired Restaurant Design in Natural Colors

This restaurant’s name describes its interesting space arrangement – a double floor space hollow in the middle. The Hollow Restaurant was designed by Sergei Makhno and Vasiliy Butenko – a powerful duo that managed to transform an empty space into a fascinating dining space. Found on Cubeme, the restaurant features two floors that combine excellent service and a calming, interesting interior design. The natural colors used in creating this dining space were carefully considered to add character to the space and the textures give guests a relaxing feel, but keeps them interested in the beautiful details. The first floor of the Hollow Restaurant is occupied by the dining area, where flowers hover over the tables, while the second floor shelters a more secluded space – a lounge space that displays the same beautiful flower motif. Lamps from Vasiliy Butenko light up the space and create a special atmosphere that accompanies great meals. Wood was considered the best material that can express the designer’s intentions – a warm, inviting space that brings the focus back on the connection between creative design and natural inspiration.

Milan-based advertising agency AUGE HEADQUARTER created an advertising campaign for IKEA entitled “You Can Get More”. Released in Jan 2012, the three press prints letting people know about IKEA’s annual sale feature three furniture elements, each creatively made of cardboard boxes. You know, the ones you are eager to open once you are home and to assemble their content as soon as possible. A double bed, a chair and a lamp is the brand’s way of communicating its message: “Sales up to 40%. You can get more”. In case you were wondering, the advertising agency did not just computer-improvise the prints below, but they actually put together the pieces and photographed them in a studio. Simple and friendly, this message is sure to reach its target and create a buzz among all IKEA fans. What do you think of it?
