| Sebastien Cordoleani Molded Plywood Chaise Capas Posted: 28 Nov 2011 07:16 AM PST
Sebastien Cordoleani‘s Chaise Capas proves that modern furniture design can be both simple and complex in shape. Made of a single piece of molded plywood that forms the seat and back of the chair, Chaise Capas looks and acts as a modern chair that uses structure, shape and natural color to adorn your interiors. Six pieces of wood shape the legs and support of the chair, leaving the molded plywood construct the design of the contemporary seat. Joining the structure, these 28 mm solid oak strips are strong and simple, while the 6 mm thick oak plywood makes the chair look fragile and artistic. Many chair designs like this one found on Muuuz promise to deliver comfort, elegance and modernism through their shape, but only a few can perfectly fit in with your interior design. Freshome offers inspiration on what modern products are available, but you are the only one who can decide what is best suited for your home. Do you think the Spanish designer’s Chaise Capas could find a spot in your home?

| Two Residences, One Lot: Home+1 Project in Salt Lake City Posted: 28 Nov 2011 06:23 AM PST
We recently received an intriguing project from Cityhome Collective. I went with “intriguing”, because it is not everyday you see a beautiful home for sale accompanied by another perfectly functional adjacent cottage, ideal for a mother-in-law apartment, guest home, or nanny suite. The project is located in Salt Lake City, USA and is called “Home |+1″. We like it, because this it is the type of lot some search for years in a row and eventually end up finding a property with one construction and building another separate home next to it. The main residence in this case was designed by Ron Molen and features 4 bedrooms, large, open-concept living/dining rooms, office with vaulted ceilings, fitness/media room with hardwired speakers and kid's climbing wall, a private, Scottsdale-style front patio with fire pit, 10-person swim spa with swimming and rowing equipment, a 3 car garage and many more. The smaller of the two homes comes with 2 bedrooms, a lovely fireplace and newly renovated kitchen and bath. Would you consider your family living with someone else within the same courtyard? And if so, who would be that special someone?

| Tower Kitchen by Philippe Starck for Warendorf Posted: 28 Nov 2011 05:13 AM PST
A few weeks ago we featured some compact kitchens for small dwellings where space is a premium. In a similar vein, this kitchen by German manufacturer Warendorf has a minimal footprint thereby saving space in the kitchen. Designed by French design star Philippe Starck, the Tower Kitchen features two standalone units that each take up no more than one square meter of floor space.
The towers are separated into a hot tower that houses a conventional oven and a steam oven, and a cold tower that houses the fridge-freezer. However, supplementary electrical appliances such as a dishwasher or microwave, for example, can also be integrated into the towers.
The towers are closed on three sides with doors concealing the appliances within. The fourth side is left open and can be designed to meet the user's personal requirements. The rear wall can be used as a mirror or blackboard front, providing space for an enormous shopping list or a welcoming greeting for friends. With a light touch the flexible units can be rotated 360 degrees to reveal each of the sides.
The kitchen also features a functional island that also serves as a dining table. The “Trumpet Table” is a so-called working module that provides preparation space, sink, hob and dining area. Storage space is located beneath the work surface.
This kitchen seems ideal for entertaining. Simply spin the units around to reveal their best side to any guests you have round. Make dinner on the kitchen island before transforming it into a dining table. I think it's great for those who don't have the room for a separate dining room, don't you? |
| LEED Platinum House in San Francisco: Tiburon Bay House Posted: 28 Nov 2011 04:06 AM PST
Looking to build the highest performing LEED Platinum house possible, the owner of the Tiburon Bay House chose a sloped area on the north side of the Tiburon peninsula in San Francisco as the background for this residential project. By commissioning American architecture studio Butler Armsden, this project became an ode to environmentally-friendly architecture. All materials used to built the residence are reclaimed or sustainable. Solar powered electricity and hot water ensure modern, eco-friendly comfort, while the contemporary interior spaces and landscaped surroundings complete the residence’s indoor/outdoor living amenities. Here are a few words from the architects, explaining the structure and design of the modern house: “The floor plan of the house is centralized around a vertical stair to minimize circulation for people and utilities. The rooms are then allowed to spiral away from this core to take advantage of the views and the garden. An exterior bridge that serves as an outdoor living space also connects the garden to the house and solves the difficult problem of entering a house on a fairly steep uphill site. All of the materials used in the project are recycled or sustainable and in some cases, like the retaining walls, were salvaged from the foundations of the original house. Electricity and hot water are solar powered, and there is even a complex water reclamation system that is technologically ahead of the local building codes.”

| Intriguing Wooden Sculpture Inspired by an Exploding Log: Billon Posted: 28 Nov 2011 02:30 AM PST
We ran across this intriguing wooden sculpture envisioned by Lausanne-based Vincent Kohler, which I believe would integrate nicely in an office building voided by personality, or even in an extremely large home. Entitled “Billon”, the project measures 110 x 100 x 300 cm (43″ x 39″ x 118″) and is said to be inspired by the idea of an exploding log. The pieces were cut, respecting the laws of symmetry, which makes the whole look appealing. An interesting geometry is created, and each point of view reveals new shapes. The tree crust seems to hover on the surface, making one curious about the way all those elements stay together. The projects was completed by using a support constructed by polystyrene and resin. For art lovers, the interpretations of this modern sculpture are probably numerous. How would you define it? Do you consider this to be an inspired idea for modern interiors? | “Fluttering” Above Costa Rica’s Northern Coast : Black Beauty Mariposa Villa Posted: 28 Nov 2011 01:20 AM PST
Black Beauty Mariposa Villa is a massive 4,424 square foot, three-bedroom holiday home, located in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The translation for “Mariposa” is “butterfly” and we are curious to see if you can find the reasons behind the name. Here is a description from the project developers: “Though nestled into the terrain, Mariposa gives the appearance of fluttering above Costa Rica's lush Northern Pacific coast. Its towering height and open spaces features an uninhibited union of earth, ocean, and a luxurious modern eco-lifestyle. An enveloping exterior garden bridged by a glass circulation spine connects and subtly separates the interior living spaces & entertaining areas from the private bedrooms. Whether entering directly to the master bedroom from the corridor, or descending stairs to the family room and guest suites below, Mariposa's intimate spaces provide ultimate privacy, while expanding one's experience of picturesque nature, vivid sunsets and deluxe amenities." If you are interested in experiencing the National Wildlife Refuge, or would just love to relax in one of the world’s most famous travel destinations, you can book the villa all year long, for costs ranging from $550 to $700 per night.
