| Modern Residence Showcasing a Seemingly Unstable Architecture : SN House in Brazil Posted: 11 Nov 2011 05:49 AM PST
SN House was designed by Studio Guilherme Torres and displays an intriguing architecture, due to its original volumetry and large spans without any pillar support. The residence is located in Londrina, Brazil and was especially developed for a large family who love to have many guests in the week-ends. According to the architects, “the construction brings straight, pure and simple forms. Contrasting with the white masonry, stone and wood coatings have the power to warm the look without breaking the contemporary twist of the proposal. The independent functioning between the two storeys was another right solution. On a daily basis, the life of the family is concentrated on the upper floor, which hosts the bedrooms, the kitchen, a living and dining room, all accessed by the side ramp and garage on the upper hall. But on weekends, they enjoy receiving the large family in meetings on the spacious and comfortable leisure area with pool, garden, barbecue gourmet and two generous lounges“. Sustainability features of this home include solar heating systems and rainwater capture for various purposes.

| Snaidero’s Ola Kitchen Gets an Updated New Look Posted: 11 Nov 2011 01:36 AM PST
In 2000, the Pininfarina Studio restyled the Ola kitchen giving it new handles, new colours, a new worktop in steel and new wall units, while maintaining the technical content of the kitchen and the iconic curved look that it became known for.
After 20 years, Snaidero decided it was once again time to invest in Ola and bring it up to date with a contemporary new look. The ambitious project combined Snaidero's design history with a renewed combination of tradition and invention.
The result of the project is the Ola20 kitchen. With a new softer look, the kitchen retains many of its original features but incorporates refined aesthetic choices. The domed extractor is retained and the doors have been given a more minimalist look with the addition of integrated handles. A new worktop support has also been introduced for island units and peninsula bar units and it is this highly sculpted design that gives the kitchen that unmistakable touch of Pininfarina.
Designing an iconic product is often no longer enough to guarantee success. Those forward-thinking companies that want to stay on top of their game have to ensure that their designs remain relevant in this fast-paced world. By reinventing the Ola kitchen, Snaidero has brought it into the present day ensuring that this cult classic is just as appealing now as it was when it was first introduced to the market.
We'd love to know what you think of the new look Ola20 kitchen in comparison to the original Ola, which you can see below. And which version of Ola20 do you prefer? The clean lines and minimalist appeal of the white kitchen get our vote!

| Wonderful Slightly Slanted Residence in Poland Posted: 11 Nov 2011 12:05 AM PST
Architects Przemek Kaczkowski and Ola Targonska‘s clients for this project were a middle-aged couple who commissioned the architects to build them a home that would care for them even in the old age. The residence was constructed in a suburban are of Wroclaw, Poland’s main southwestern city, on a flat piece of land that allowed the floor plan to be T-shaped and all interior spaces to be placed on one single level, just like the owners wanted. This ensured that there were no stairs to make the journey from one space to another more difficult than it had to be. The single family contemporary residence displays a homogeneous and private facade adorned with wood cladding. The backside however, is totally different: glazed walls ensure views of the elegant and unpretentious garden while a slight elevation removes the need for stairs. Living spaces are connected with a sunny terrace on the outside and with a large, open series of spaces on the inside. A slanted ceiling over the living wing gives the spaces a feeling of openness, while the private wing offers all the comfort in a bright and cheery atmosphere. Lovely home for a smart couple.

| Sculpture Under Glass: Original Coffee Tables by Larry and Nancy Buechley Posted: 10 Nov 2011 10:53 AM PST
From their home-based studio tucked in the remote mountain village of El Valle, New Mexico, the husband/wife furniture design duo Larry and Nancy Buechley crafted a charming furniture collection that includes dinning tables, consoles, rockers and chairs. They recently sent us some information and photos about these inspiring twisted coffee table bases, which we are happy to share further: Both art majors in college — Larry focusing on sculpture, Nancy on painting — the two found themselves increasingly drawn to furniture design and construction. The results of the artists turned self-taught furniture makers are dramatic twisting, turning furniture masterpieces with impossible flowing lines. “Because we approach our work from an art background, rather than a technical school side, we are more interested in form, balance, positive and negative space,” says Larrry. The coffee tables are available for purchase online here, with prices ranging from $1800 for the Wovenwood Coffee Table Base (first photo of the post), to $2000 for the Trefoil Coffee Table Base (second picture).

| Arches and Timber Planks Creating Original Architecture: Vault Room in Belgium Posted: 10 Nov 2011 09:32 AM PST
When dealing with small spaces, creativity can turn things around for the better. This is the case with the “Vault Room”, a rehabilitation project developed by Brussels based international practice 51N4E. According to the architects, “the renovation of this small terraced house, in the historical heart of Bruges,Belgium, consists of reinterpreting the typical cramped back buildings as a spacious and generous lit winter garden. The double-height space, entirely covered in timber planks, starts off as an arch which gradually lifts asymmetrically towards the back, framing the tall tree of a neighboring garden. The old house is entirely renovated with partly new flooring and new color schemes for facade, walls and ceilings. The custom made kitchen furniture with integrated fire place doubles as working area, becoming the new center of the house“. I was personally very pleased to see that the exterior architecture was left intact, while the interior was designed in a creative modern style. What are your thoughts on this strange looking “vault home”? [Photography by Lindman Åke E:son]

Ocean Shell
Ocean Sailor
Ocean Circle According to Manuel Dreesmann, the designer of both Ocean Wing and Ocean Wave displayed below, these two bathtubs fit perfectly into the modern bath lounge. The main structure of both bathtubs is made out of corian which makes the organic and dramatic forms possible. Ocean Wing plays with the natural element of wood outside and the warm and hygienic corian in the inside. The contrast of this materials and the form, which combines this two harmonically, are the key design elements of this bathtub.
Ocean Wing Ocean Wave is a celebration of a relaxing bath. The spacious and elegant impression invites the resident to take time and escape from the everday life. Because of its extraordinary form it is meant to be placed in the centre of the room.
