| Cats With Pom-Poms And Dachshund Dogs Pillow Collection Posted: 09 Nov 2011 07:31 AM PST
The Naked Decor 2012 Collection from Thailand-born designer Supon Phornirunlit caught my eye with a beautiful set of two matching and continuing pillows depicting cats and dogs. Inspired by the designer’s own lovely pets, this collection features several variations on the same theme. Cats with pom-poms and dachshund dogs were portrayed in colorful silhouettes, creating a fresh pillow collection. Hand silk-screened on cotton canvas, the silhouettes have different color combinations: brown and orange, black and white, tan or white background with a striped dog silhouette and more. Featuring poly fill insert, each pillow closes with a zipper and offers an interesting decor while expressing the owner’s love for pets. Sold separately, the pillows work best as a duo, so make sure the space fits both pillows for a full effect.

| Unusual Single-Family House by Office Kokiwoong Posted: 09 Nov 2011 05:20 AM PST
This single-family House in Pankyo can inspire creatives to play with lines and volumes in a different way. Personal desires were transformed into architectural language when Office Kokiwoong was commissioned to build this contemporary residence. Inhabited by a young couple in their mid 30s and their two children, the house in the Korean county of Pankyo welcomes family and guests in a modern collection of interiors that speak a non-traditional architectural language. Dynamic lines create a playful architecture, allowing some windows to bulge on the facade, and others to be embedded in the design. The use of wood on the exterior lower part of the building can also be observed inside, where pure white walls beautifully contrast with the wooden floors. Translucence and transparency go hand in hand and successfully create a game of direct and indirect natural light. After admiring the photos, please tell us what was the first think about this home that caught your attention.

| Depicting a City Landscape: Silhouette Sideboards by Bat Eye Posted: 09 Nov 2011 04:21 AM PST
Silhouette Sideboards come from Marco Sousa, an architect working with Bat Eye in Portugal. According to the press release we were sent, the “Silhouette” concept derives from the “shapes” of the city of Porto: “Following my degree and after several years dedicated to architecture, I felt the need to design furniture, which would bring together the elements that bridge art and architecture. My pure thoughts turned into spiritual and cultural expressions from the places. The shapes, movements, gestures, (chromatic) that my eyes behold are transcribed into the furniture as a tribute to those places. The intention is to create parts from all over the world for the world. The city’s silhouette is not wiped from our memory, even when our eyes are closed“. The Silhouette sideboards feature hand-painted tiles, stainless steel supports and high-gloss finish. Their imposing dimensions (height 95cm, width 230cm, depth 85cm) call for a large room with a clean design approach. Do you appreciate this daring idea?

| Sun-Filled Home on Lake Ontario’s Shoreline: House on the Bluffs Posted: 09 Nov 2011 03:18 AM PST
Today, a contemporary home designed by Taylor Smyth Architects caught our attention with its modern architecture rising on the base of what used to the owner’s childhood home. The 2,300 square foot House on the Bluffs in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, gathers views of the ever-changing sky from all directions through tall trees that were kept intact during the construction. Glimpses of the nearby lake can be observed from some vantage points in the house and natural sunlight filtered through branches floods the modern interiors. Placed along the shoreline of Lake Ontario, the white stucco volume looks welcoming and makes you wonder how the house feels on the inside.
Grey Canadian limestone was used to adorn the front facade and some elements seen in the two-storey living room were given the same finish in Ontario Algonquin limestone, creating a strong visual connection between the outer and inner appearance. A screen of vertical channel glass on the front facade ensures that the staircase, guest bathroom and master bathroom get enough light, while the last one – a comfortable and relaxing master bedroom – opens to views of the lake through a backside glass wall. This transparent system of windows and a beautiful skylight ensure that the inhabitants live in a sun-filled home.

| Discreet Shape and Sophisticated Pattern: Can Can Pendant Light Posted: 09 Nov 2011 02:19 AM PST
Uniquely displaying a bold and sophisticated pattern and an elegant, clean shell, the Can Can Pendant Light was designed by Netherlands-based designer Marcel Wanders and is exclusively available online in the U.S. for the first time on YLighting. We recently featured his fabulous Crochet Furniture Collection and today, the fascinating Can Can Pendant Light was brought to our attention. Available in a series of color combinations – black/transparent, white/transparent, black/yellow, black/fuchsia, white/yellow, white/fuchsia – the pendant light adorns your room with a gorgeous decorative effect: ” Can Can melds together simple classic forms with features that draw on tradition. From a distance, Can Can introduces itself as a lamp with a stern design that unexpectedly, when seen close up, reveals a floral decoration that filters the light as it is diffused. Delicate and unpredictable, the beam is broken by the polycarbonate decorative flourish to create an ever changing fabric of light.” The YLighting + FLOS Pattern Play Design Contest offers you a chance to win the lamp and an additional $2,500 – and this is only the first prize. Check out the YLighting website for more details and good luck to those participating in the contest!

| Compact Home in Switzerland Ensuring a Large Degree of Privacy: Schuler Villa Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:13 AM PST
Schuler Villa was designed by Andrea Pelati Architecte and is located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The main factor considered when planning the layout of the residence, was the privacy of its inhabitants. This way, the side facing the street is relatively closed, while the opposite facade is open towards a lovely garden. Here is more information regarding the structure of the residence from the architects: “On the ground floor, the rental apartment has the advantage of a direct access to the garden bordered with trees. In the higher levels, the entrance hall of the main apartment connects to the bedroom's hall and a staircase that leads to the attic. At this level, the entire space is dedicated to the day zone. On the south side, the terrace extends the dining room and is opened on the park and the roof landscape of the old village. The varying height of the façade walls builds a screen against sights and allows the occupants to enjoy this space with complete serenity. On the north side, the living room is extended through a second terrace with a direct access to the private garden. The view opens then widely on the vine fields and the Jura Mountains”. How do you appreciate the design of this modern villa?

| Hypnotic Light Show Turns Polygonal Shape Into Moving Sculpture [Video] Posted: 08 Nov 2011 01:49 PM PST
"Parmenides I" is a contemporary art installation by artist Dev Harlan, consisting of an interesting mix of foam, wood, plaster, and video projections. An eight foot diameter sculpture was used as a main element in a light show that can be described as original and captivating. According to Laughing Squid, the white polygonal shape is brought to life by having various intricate patterns projected on its surface. The film below was shot during Dev Harlan’s solo exhibition “The Astral Flight Hangar”, at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York City. We imagine it was quite interesting to watch the display live. You can observe from the movie that the effect of the light show is pretty strong, especially when complemented by great background music. We find this game of light and shapes to be a bit hypnotic and are curious to see your reactions after seeing the film. |

| Modern Cascading Creek House With Intriguing Sustainable Features Posted: 08 Nov 2011 08:37 AM PST
Cascading Creek House was designed by Bercy Chen Studio and is located in rural Texas, USA. One of the most striking elements of the project’s architecture is the roof, especially designed to collect rainwater. More sustainable features of this home include photo-voltaic and solar hot-water panels. According to the architects, “the water, electricity and heat which are harvested on the roof tie into an extensive climate conditioning system which utilizes water source heat pumps and radiant loops to supply both the heating and cooling for the residence. The climate system is connected to geothermal ground loops as well as pools and water features thereby establishing a system of heat exchange which minimizes reliance on electricity or gas. Each wing of the house terminates with the roof cantilevered from a single column that frees up the exterior walls to be fully glazed, flooding the tall and open volume of the living room with daylight and offering generous views of the pool deck and the wooded silhouettes of the Texas Hill Country beyond“. All these sustainable features were integrated in a way that does not compromise the modern appearance of the residence. If you find this hard to believe, just have a look below!
