| Why We Love The Art of Carpenting [Short Film] Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:58 AM PDT
“A carpenter is a skilled craftspersons who works with timber to construct, install and maintain buildings, furniture and other objects“. This may seem like a lifeless definition for a job that is otherwise full of challenges, ingenuity and sometimes a great deal of passion. “The Carpenter” is an exquisite short film created by Greek design and art studio Deep Green Sea. According to the developers, it is the first movie to launch a series of similar productions presenting the art and science of professionals working with their hands. A tribute to a type of work that is no longer as appreciated as it should be, due to the strong process of industrialization. The film is “different”, fresh and captivating, with a soundtrack to match its visual quality. We absolutely love it and are delightful to share it further. | Russia’s First Active House by Polygon Lab Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT
The first Active House in Russia was designed by architecture firm Polygon Lab and is situated in the outskirts of Moscow, in Zapadnaya Dolina. According to the developers, “the design is based on the Active House principle of reaching a balance between energy saving, healthy indoor climate and care for the environment, all of which add to the architectural quality and well-being of the residents“. This particular home in Russia is said to be energy efficient and easy to operate. Its design integrates various energy sources, such as solar thermal collectors, roof windows, a PV solar cell system to generate electricity and a highly effective heat pump. Moreover, the residence features multiple layers of insulation, as well as a healthy indoor climate, filled with natural light and fresh air. This is possible due windows that open and close based on the CO2 levels in the house. More information about this project on Aktivny Dom.

| Lined Up in a Romantic Way: Comete Jewelry Store in Milan Posted: 24 Oct 2011 05:28 AM PDT
We received some photos of the original Comete jewelry store from Studio Apostoli, a company also working in the field of concept design. The project is located in Milan, Italy, and focuses on senses and emotions dealt with in a practical way . Here is more from the press release we were sent: “The idea is born from the "claim" of the well known brand Comete – "Romanticamente schierati" (lined up in a romantic way) – that places side by side a rich intimate dimension of feelings and emotions and a rational and pragmatic attitude. The sale point becomes a luminous backdrop punctuated by illuminated (led) circular display windows of three different dimensions that seem to fluctuate on a hypothetical horizon. The light of the backdrop keep changing creating itself emotions and games always different during not only the day but also based on the seasons or to the various periodic or thematic occasions.” From a point of view of a potential customer- does this jewelry store design make a strong impression?

| Transparent Extension Designed For a Modern Hair Salon Posted: 24 Oct 2011 04:36 AM PDT
Japanese studio Takehiko Nez Architects created an interesting play of light and volumes when designing the extension to an existing hair salon in Yamanashi, Japan. Called Vision, the modern hair salon sits at the confluence of past and future, displaying a welcoming glass front facade. This allows a clear view of daily employee-client interaction while exploring an interesting architectural set of design lines. By allowing full visibility towards the modernly designed interiors, the hair salon is a much more inviting commercial space now that a fascinating glass facade draws curious passers-by. Long and elegant curtains manipulate the amount of natural light needed for the interiors in different times of the day. This exposure facade faces a parking lot, while the existing building and the addition have a garden in between. An underground shampoo space links the existing building to the extension, creating a logical and modern path for clients moving from one part of the hair salon to the other. Transparency seems to have been the main goal of the addition, setting new standards for the daily routine of the Japanese hair salon.

| Pendant Lamp Made From Hundreds of Folded Fortune Tellers Posted: 24 Oct 2011 03:27 AM PDT
Remember those fun paper fortune tellers that had real fascination for us as children? We ran across a DIY project that we are certain is going to appeal to your creative side. This pretty pendant lamp in the photos below was made using hundreds of folded fortune tellers (or salt shakers, as some people call them). The process is quite simple: use normal white paper to create the fortune tellers, then glue them (on the center point of the underside of the fortune teller) on a spherical lantern. Allison Patrick created this crazy design by using a pre-existing 16″ paper lantern, which makes the entire light measures approximately 18″ (45 cm) across. If you do not have the time or the patience to put one together yourself, you can purchase the pendant lamp on Etsy, for $250. Does this look like something you would have the patience to achieve?

| Bus Shelter in Daroca, Spain by Sergio Sebastián Posted: 24 Oct 2011 01:35 AM PDT
Daroca is an impressive medieval city located in the province of Zaragoza, Spain. Sergio Sebastián Arquitecto created a bus shelter, combining function with aesthetics. According to the designer, “the intervention builds a piece that greets visitors arriving at Daroca, providing a single image in a peripheral environment that has nothing to do with the beauty of the medieval town. The shelter is generated from two very marked and heavy planes, ground and cover, which build a comfortable space whose section is opened from the lying area to the landing of the bus. This space is bounded laterally by wooden filters that generate the necessary equipment for the wait -umbrellas, benches and signs-, lattices that outline the space but do not prevent understanding in continuity with the public space of the ride“. What is your stand on this type of street furniture in a medieval city like Daroca, Spain?

| Modern Residence Flooded With Natural Light in Southern Luxembourg Posted: 24 Oct 2011 12:24 AM PDT
Two Row Houses is a contemporary architecture project belonging to Luxembourg-city-based studio Metaform and located in the village of Goeblange, southern Luxembourg. According to the architects, “the complex construction is based on a traditional frame with rafters and sheathing and a metal construction that is used to attach the fiber cement roofing panels. The circulation space and the way the house has been divided starts with the glass slab on the first floor. It helps light penetrate from skylights down to the entrance in the ground floor. Thus the disadvantage of an unfavorable luminosity due to the significant depth of 15m construction is removed. The house is flooded with these skylights that are beaming from underneath in the evening and consequently avoids the use of prominent luminaries. A large glass aperture (10x3m) characterizes the interest brought to the outside light and landscape and tries to remove the physical boundaries of the house.” With a contemporary and minimalist design, floor to ceiling windows and access to a lovely green yard with pond, this place is captivating to say the least.
