| Impressive Three-Volume Residence on Shelter Island Posted: 19 Oct 2011 03:32 AM PDT
YN-13 House is a complex residential three-volume structure interrupted by “corridors” of outside space. An imposing two-storey main structure houses the entertaining facilities and living spaces on one floor and private quarters on the next, while two smaller volumes shelter a guest wing and a garage. Successfully designing the cedar-cladded complex of structures, architects from Manhattan-based Morris Sato Studio, inspired by historic buildings of Kyoto and Kanazawa, Japan, built a terne-coated stainless steel roof that compliments the colors and shape of the entire set of boxed structures.
In order to better understand the carefully designed inside spaces, the architects description of the interior architecture will help: “In the interior, the minimally partitioned first level allows for an uninterrupted diagonal flow of loft-like space and the expansive glazing at the corners connecting indoor and outdoor activities. The second level's bedrooms are punctured with a series of openings and terraces providing light and views. A large interior void joins the two floors in a continuous convection of air ventilating the interior. The void additionally serves as a spatial inversion of light at the inner most point in the volume and as a counterpoint to fireplace and masonry chimney tower on the exterior. The single-storied guest wing and garage buildings define an enclosed courtyard space for the swimming pool, gardens and views to the ocean beyond.” Would you like to have a residence made of many volumes or do you prefer a single structure for all daily activities?

| Halloween Inspires Dark Interiors for your Home Posted: 19 Oct 2011 02:34 AM PDT The appeal of light and airy interiors of spring and summer are always welcomed as the weather turns warm, but as autumn sets in, and Halloween grows near, the appeal of dark interiors to warm up next to a crackling fireplace are more inviting for the season. Whether you love dark accents throughout your home of deep walnut stained wood floors, or you enjoy the heavy and dark textiles of dramatic bedding in your bedroom, here are some dark interiors to create the perfect Halloween themed interior for you to surround yourself in.
Who said Halloween is only for one day? This holiday can inspire your interiors with dark colors for all of autumn and into the next season. Dark elements can warm, and show off your key elements in any room. If you decide to go for dark, consider the lighting, and other members of your household to get their opinion. While dark colors are mysterious, they have different connotations for everyone. The beauty of decor is that everyone sees it in their own light and for dark interiors that light may brighten your whole mood. |

| Minimalist Japanese Architecture: The Mishima House Posted: 19 Oct 2011 12:25 AM PDT
The Mishima House was designed by Keiji Ashizawa Design and is an example of beautiful minimalist Japanese architecture. This abode in Tokyo seems to be the result of its surrounding urban environment. Its asymmetrical shape makes it stand out, but at the same time requires an ingenious layout. The architects had no trouble meeting the demands of the clients, by creating a home that is well connected with the outdoors. Moreover, the Mishima House offers a large degree of privacy and comfort. The interior design seems to mirror the exterior landscape and features intriguing steel supports which are intentionally left uncovered, for an original visual effect. The rooms are spacious and have interesting inclined walls, as a result of the crib’s overall form. Enjoy the design ideas this unique Japanese home offers and tell us what you find particularly inspiring.

| PlateTopper Invention is 100x Faster than Plastic Wrap ( Video ) Posted: 18 Oct 2011 02:48 PM PDT
Today we’d love to present you a really simple and smart idea that allows you to keep a meal or snack fresh for your family . The PlateTopper is essentially a large suction cup with a central plastic container to store food that was invented by Michael Tseng. With a simple downward press, the suction creates an airtight seal over a plate of food. It's a concept that transforms your dinner plates into airtight food storage containers ( if you can’t imagine how the PlateTopper works don’t worry, we have a video below ). After a few seconds of using the product, it becomes clear that the PlateTopper is faster and easier to use than tinfoil and plastic wrap. For busy parents, the invention is perfect for storing a plate of dinner or an after-school snack. It's also great for storing leftovers and then re-heating them in the microwave. As you'd expect, the PlateTopper is also dishwasher safe.
The fact that the PlateTopper is reusable should appeal to the eco-friendly crowd who don't want to toss tinfoil or plastic wrap. The product is also 100% BPA-free, and remarkably, it's assembled without glue or adhesives. The PlateTopper Universal Food Lid hits the market this month, offering an easy-to-use and eco-friendly alternative to wasteful plastic wrap and tinfoil. With the support of Kickstarter, Michael Tseng finally has a platform to test the market. He's aiming to raise $12,000 worth of pre-orders for the PlateTopper before the start of manufacturing, which is slated to begin in November 2011. For more information on how to pre-order the PlateTopper, visit Kickstarter or to learn more, visit platetopper.com. Finally here is a video that presents the PlateTopper in more detail …take a look and tell us what do you think about this simple but innovative idea. |

Some residence are built with two ideas in mind – a perfect, customized residential plan for its inhabitants and a home so beautiful that instantly becomes a dream home for anyone who sees it. This is the case with this next house in Almunecar named Pure White – a fascinating residence designed by Susanna Cots. Interior spaces can be described as ordered, comfortable and luxurious. Flooded with light, the house above the sea gathers panoramic views from several vantage points, at the same time protecting the inhabitants’ privacy by displaying a modern and robust front facade, partially cladded in wood. Five different zones make up this residence’s floor plan. The first one – the service wing- can accommodate up to five people, the second one is the children’s wing – the only part of the house that is adorned with colorful furniture and furnishings. The third zone encompasses the living, dining and kitchen in a seamless space that gathers family and friends. The upper volume shelters the private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms, while the last zone is occupied by a guest area on the ground floor, with direct access to the pool and sundeck. This residence goes to great lengths to show its owners that it is the best home for them.
