| Sleek Dressers Featuring Colorful Silk-Screened Designs Posted: 23 Sep 2011 07:13 AM PDT
The modern baroque-inspired dressers from Italian company Seletti encompass sleek and curvy features into a modern packaging. The reinterpretation of classic design seems to suit the artist’s intentions of creating a cheerful but stylish furniture collection. With Selad as designers and Seletti as manufacturers, these cool and fresh dressers are a result of skillful manufacturing: silk – screened wood turned into modern versions of classic dressers. These bright and youthful chests can change the atmosphere of a space. The larger, bulkier three-drawer chest Trip 3 Drawers measures 100 x 48 x 84 cm, while the smaller one – Trip 2 Drawers – measures 101 x 39 x76 cm. The finishing touches were done by hand and customers can choose from five different skins: Pois (polka dots), Righe Colore (color stripes), Mappa Bianca (white map), Mappa Nera (black map), and Pied-de-Poule (houndstooth).

| Stylish and Inpiring: Barra Funda II Apartment by Kwartet Arquitetura Posted: 23 Sep 2011 03:34 AM PDT
We recently received a lovely project called Barra Funda II Apartment from Kwartet Arquitetura, which we believe you will find quite inspiring. Here is the press release we were sent: “Located in a residential neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil, this apartment belongs to a young couple with small children. Since not many changes were made to the original structure, well-designed furniture improves the use of space. The walnut carpentry on the walls became the basis to a clean and contemporary decoration. The continuous panels were designed to hide the doors from the lavatory, home office and bedroom's hall, in order to create continuity. The color application is smooth: Red, black and mainly grey, a warm interior atmosphere with minimalist style. A spacious square dining table has clean design, with wood and black chairs. The black pendant ties up the decoration. Besides the buffet, twin china closet covered with wallpaper, also designed by Kwartet Arquitetura.
The home office reveals the same wood used on the living room panels, contrasting with grey table and cabinets. The sliding door may completely integrate the space or provide privacy when needed. The master bedroom received delicate furniture. The headboard and the side tableswere designed attached to each other, in white lacquer and oak. The texture enriches the result. The children bedroom with its cute dinosaur's wallpaper has half walls covered with white lacquered MDF panels, designed with a slightly classical top frame. The deskwith drawers was also designed with specific dimensions, so every inch in the room would be well used. Small wheeled boxes provide room for toys”.

| Old Plane Engine Used as Coffee Table Base Posted: 23 Sep 2011 02:34 AM PDT
We recently ran across this odd, yet very cool design. What you see is what you get: the base of this coffee table is a genuine plane engine. According to Design Milk, the Cylinder Radial Engine Table was created by using a base that comes from a US Army Boeing-Stearman PT-13 and was acquired from the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia. What we really appreciate about this unusual project is that even though its base is highly mechanical and vintage, the overall appearance of the design is contemporary. We believe it could fit well in a minimalist modern decor, don’t you agree? The table is available for purchase online on Decoratum Gallery and the price is £19,750. Would you consider having such a design in your home or do you find it too extravagant?

| Contemporary Tree House in South Africa Showcasing an Impressive Design Posted: 23 Sep 2011 01:12 AM PDT
Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects have designed the Tree House, a 2,475 square foot, three story contemporary residence located in Cape Town, South Africa. The project concept is based on the fact that the tree is an iconic and precious life element in Africa, providing shelter and shield. Here is more from the architects: “Five tree-like structures anchor the roof to the ground and provide shelter for the functions gathered under. These trees are surrounded by an entirely separate lightweight transparent steel and glass enclosure supported on a heavily rusticated stone base. The design of the house incorporates themes of narrative, of layering and of expressed threshold. The visitor is invited to take part in a journey of discovery, requested to participate in the unlocking of experiences within the house, the unpeeling of layers. We tried to heighten the experience of unveiling and of delicate exposure, to create within the house sensuality and moments of intense intimacy – a folly immersed in, and closely linked with, the majestic beauty of the African landscape – a simultaneous dialogue between inside and outside and outside and inside, neither taking precedent over the other." Enjoy the design details of this unusual “tree house” and don’t hesitate to share your opinions in the comments section below.

| Elegant Touchscreen Device Lets You See What You Print [Video] Posted: 22 Sep 2011 11:40 AM PDT
SWYP: See What You Print is a revolutionary printer that allows you to modify photos at a 1:1 scale. This means no more surprises, as the modifications you make on your photo are being processed on the spot and you can see the results right away, exactly how they will appear on printed paper. The simple, witty and fun solution was created by the people at Artefact Group who noticed that “the issue with printers is not that we lack the necessary technology, but rather that the core design and usability issues have not been fully addressed. Traditional OEMs are making incremental improvements end up over-complicating what should be a simple process and producing over-bloated boxes that sit in our shelves“. This is why their design is based on “radically simple editing and printing. When you print only what you intend, you eliminate the frustration and waste of unwanted prints”. Check out the video below for a fun preview of how the device works.

| Tape Installations Emphasising on Failure as The Key to Success Posted: 22 Sep 2011 08:33 AM PDT
Designer Stephen Doyle has achieved a series of tape installations based on a highly intriguing statement. After carefully analyzing the school environment in “his” institution, Dominic Randolph, headmaster at Riverdale Country School asserted: “What if the secret to success is failure?”. He says "whether it's the pioneer in the Conestoga wagon or someone coming here in the 1920s from southern Italy, there was this idea in America that if you worked hard and you showed real grit, that you could be successful. Strangely, we've now forgotten that. People who have an easy time of things, who get 800s on their SAT's, I worry that those people get feedback that everything they're doing is great. And I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure. When that person suddenly has to face up to a difficult moment, then I think they're screwed, to be honest. I don't think they've grown the capacities to be able to handle that." The tape installations in the photos below are a tribute to this idea, as promulgated by the The New York Times article, "What if the Secret to Success is Failure? Grit, optimism, curiosity and even failure- they are all at the basis of building character, allowing the students to become stronger with each major life experience.
