| Enchanting Apartment Displaying a Minimalist Design in Rome Posted: 16 Sep 2011 06:58 AM PDT
Celio Apartment was designed by Italian architect Carola Vannini and is located near the famous Colosseum in Rome, Italy. With a total budget of €250.000, this 2,580 square foot loft was recently renovated in a beautiful minimalist manner. Here is more from the designer: “The client's main need of opening the space toward the outside landscape, generated a design characterized by light and airy rooms. Several windows have been reopened, and the interior distribution has been changed in order to create multiple perspectives. Main space of the day area is the kitchen volume, which is in direct relation with both the entrance and the living room. The living room has a minimal flair, and its furniture (designed by the architect) creates a balance with the interior architecture. The lighting system has been carefully studied in order to emphasize perspectives and space depth. A direct relation with the exterior area is underlined by the wooden floor that extends from the interior space into the balcony. The kitchen has a sculptural valence, which partially hides its real function.” Definitely not what the Rome Colosseum would inspire, but a lovely home nonetheless.

| Modern Japanese Home With A Fascinating Architecture Geometry Posted: 16 Sep 2011 05:54 AM PDT
This stunning looking minimalist residence was designed by Shigeru Fuse Architects and is located in Abiko, a city in northern Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The striking thing about this unusual home is its architecture geometry. According to the project developers, the construction site has a height difference of about 5 meters between the pedestrian path on the south and the the parking lot facing north . The total building area of 48.54 square meters required unique architecture plans in order to enhance living space. The residence belongs to a married couple who requested that the concrete interiors of the house should be similar to that of a gallery. Even though the rooms may give the overall feeling of living in a trendy bunker, inspiring soberness and lacking vivid colors, their originality is striking and therefore highly appealing. The architects say “the interiors were pursued by a rational form of spatial relationships and structure, which creates a sense of various space perceptions“. We are curious in finding out your opinions regarding this Japanese home design. [Photography: H. Ueda ]

| Hairdresser Shop and Residence In One Colorful Building: Casa Sasso Posted: 16 Sep 2011 04:10 AM PDT
Here is a colorful and tasteful home design that will cheer you up. Casa Sasso comes from 57Studio and is a 1 658 SqFt residence located in Santiago, Chile. The project consisted in redefining a 1960s home and transforming it into a hairdresser shop and living space. The two functionally different units were separated by an inspired use of color. This way the residence looks like a giant red & white cube and faces the back garden, while the hairdresser shop is brown and has a parallelepiped shape, connected to the street. According to the architects, “the volumes are covered with fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) panels, in modules that optimize their industrial format. The hairdresser shop's access is defined within that modulation and its interior space is illuminated through a skylight. Glass was also utilized in the house, incorporated as a new enveloping material. The second level corner windows were designed according to the requirements of each interior space. In the bathroom, an elevated window controls the view from the exterior. The children's room has a mid height window, and in the main dormitory a large fixed full height window is incorporated, offering a direct view to Santiago's Manquehue hill. The intention was to bring out the glass, without frameworks or openings, therefore the ventilation is provided through a hatchway, lost to the exterior through a FRC module“. | The Comfy Way of Living in an Aistream Trailer by Matthew Hofmann Posted: 16 Sep 2011 02:15 AM PDT
Matthew Hofmann (of Hofmann Architecture), a 28-year-old Central California Coast-based architect, is the master craftsman who’s turning back the clock. This is his second high-design Airstream project to be released this year. Can you remember the first Airstream remodel? According to the official project description we received, “for this design Hofmann found four feet of linear counter-height deck space for a built-in desk, mid-level chair and three drawers situated between the bathroom and kitchen. A view of the Pacific Ocean is framed in a window that can be seen while sitting at the built-in desk. A centrally-located hi-def 19-inch video monitor displays either DVDs or streamed Netflix videos from anywhere in the trailer. A surround sound audio system provides more than enough sound support. The monitor swivels on a pullout arm for optimal viewing adjustments and tucks away neatly behind a rollup cabinet.
A high-design brushed stainless steel sink and faucet sits on an elegantly curved deck that faces another nifty addition – a see-through fish tank that's visible from the office and bathroom, with only the fish seeing what’s on each side. The Cali Bamboo flooring is a nice sustainable feature. The backlit ceiling lights emit a soft glow against the brilliant white surfaces. Three LED puck lights over the kitchen/office stubbornly keep electric usage down and specific task lighting cranked up. The dining area has been expanded to seat six comfortably at the table, with the addition of two fold-away chairs that adjoin the kitchen area. Underneath the left and right access benches are two “carry-on luggage-sized drawers,” as Hofmann calls them. “They’re for guests to store their travel bags." The drawer guides, as are all installed drawers, constructed with silent closing Hafele German-crafted hardware that’s sturdy enough for 50 lbs. of gear.” Freshome readers, how do you appreciate the functionality and design of this project?

| The Ultimate Tree House: Froschkönig by Baumraum Posted: 16 Sep 2011 01:01 AM PDT
German firm Baumraum is specialized in planning and developing tree houses, either built on the ground (at a dizzy height) or on water. Froschkönig (German for Frog King) is a project that left us speechless. Located in a private garden in Munster, the delightful playground was built on four steel columns. The interior looks great due to the curved glass surface, gable roof and light flooding the elongated windows. You could say that the most attractive part of the luxurious play room is a large “ceiling” window, allowing children to look up in the sky and observe the stars at night. What a way to learn the constellations! The tree house features enough storage space for books, games or blankets. A large deck area makes for the perfect playing spot. Check out the company’s website for more stunning tree houses and even tree hotels!

| Modern Intersecting Volumes with Uneven Levels: Godoy House Posted: 15 Sep 2011 11:29 PM PDT
Located on a corner lot in a residential neighborhood just outside of the city of Zapopan, Mexico, the house designed by Hernandez Silva Arquitectos is a contemporary residential construction characterized by modern architecture and exquisite design. A grey stone volume and a larger, higher, transparent volume make up the bold architecture of this residence. The first body of the intersecting volumes shapes a semi-underground garage, while the second one on top extends in the back of the building to create private living spaces protected by a white steel lattice. The cantilevering master bedroom on the second floor not only benefits from extensive panoramas of the garden and wooded backside, but also offers shade and weather protection for the deck below. Uneven levels were formed in the architecture – starting with a semi-basement and continuing all the way back to the open living spaces in the garden. These rooms are linked to the outside garden, terrace and pool by a system of folding windows. Showcasing beautiful interiors and landscaped exterior spaces, the Godoy House strives to be a fabulous dream home.
