Architectural Hybrid in Estonia: Tartu Rebase Street Posted: 09 Jul 2011 12:16 AM PDT Tartu Rebase Street was designed by Atelier Thomas Pucher. Created as a housing estate, the flexible concept located in Tartu, Estonia features 444 apartments. By building penthouses on top of each other, the architects managed to make two worlds collide: the low-cost apartment life and the luxurious villa lifestyle, with wide access to private outdoor spaces. Excluding the parking facilities, the project’s total built surface reaches 29.200 square meters. The urban equivalent of villa living, the Tartu Rebase Street project encompasses a compact space, organized into zones: the middle part of each building contains a spiral staircase with apartments organized around it. There are two rings of space: the inner ring close to the lobby and the outer ring living zone oriented outwards to the panoramas. That allows the inner service ring to contain rooms like entrances, wardrobes, toilets, bathrooms and saunas, or kitchens – that protect the living zones in the outer ring from the noise of the lobby. The flexible floor plan allows inhabitants to create personalized interiors that can last up to generations. Would you like to live in such an architectural hybrid?

Volumes and Voids: Graham Residence by E. Cobb Architects Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:41 AM PDT The Graham Residence by E. Cobb Architects seems to have been built as a contemporary statement – an oasis of modern lifestyle featuring a grandiose architecture. Found on Plastolux, the Graham Residence displays a series of cantilevering volumes that merge in a unified design. The intricate architecture needs plenty of time to be understood: from the extensive use of glass in all major parts of the house to the interesting display of interiors. Take your time while admiring this house, because it is one of a kind and induces a feeling of fascinating respect for its beautiful design lines. Large open spaces and double-height rooms transform this exceptional residence into an artistic expression of light captured between walls. Concrete, wood and glass come together to shape the architecture, while the interior spaces feature modern furniture and furnishings. The fluid arrangement of spaces hints towards a modern lifestyle and need to connect with the surroundings. I believe that this residence is high on the list for dream homes, don’t you?

Fun Reminders of Childhood: Concrete Building Blocks Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:36 AM PDT How many times have you thought about the fun times you had with the world-renowned Lego bricks? And how many of you still enjoy playing with the little building pieces? Lego blocks have been around for decades and apparently, it was high time that real building blocks stepped up. The interlocking concrete bricks were hand cast to resemble a standard 2×4 LEGO building block and remind everyone about the great time they spent during their childhood pretending to build amazing structures. Some architects might even consider this an exceptional gift, just like any other Lego fan. Use them to constantly remind yourself of the joys of a carefree childhood or give them away as presents to whomever you feel would enjoy them most. The concrete bricks are all unique due to the features of the material. You can find them on Minnesota-based Studio 1015′s Etsy store and they cost $ 8,50 for a 6-piece set.
