Cool Urban Furniture: Bike Rack Shaped Like a Giant Comb Posted: 30 Jun 2011 04:29 AM PDT We have a lot of Freshome readers that love bicycles, so why not provide the best ideas out there? We published a few posts these past two months about unusual urban racks, but we have to say this takes the cake. Simply because it is highly original and therefore quite eye-catching.  As seen on Monkeyzen, this wooden Giant Comb Bike Rack wights a total of 400 lbs (that is almost 182 Kilos!) and was ” handcrafted out of Mangaris using full mortise and tenon construction, while the hair is made from powder coated steel." The project was achieved by the Knowhow Shop LA, as a public art installation for the city of Roanoke. We absolutely love this idea and hope to see many more similar projects in the future. Unique Roof Playground in Copenhagen for Both Children and Adults Posted: 30 Jun 2011 03:15 AM PDT Danish company Julien de Smedt (JDS) Architects came up with an original way to take advantage of a space that is usually neglected: the roof. They managed to create an incredible rolling rooftop playground and park in Copenhagen's Nørrebro district. The idea of the project was triggered by the fact that courtyards in Nørrebro tend to be narrow and crowded, which was also the case for this residential block (a three-penthouse building, also designed by JDS). The giant roof terrace consists of a grassy hill with curved steps, a playground (with a shock-absorbing surface), a wooden deck and a suspension bridge. A great place for children to play and for adults to relax, this inspiring project takes the idea of a green roof to a whole new level. The total costs for the block were $1.35 million, which we consider to be a reasonable price for a three-floor building with a highly original relaxation space. Imitating Nature: Volskar Lamp Collection by Blue Nature Posted: 30 Jun 2011 01:49 AM PDT The Volskar Lamp Collection comes from Blue Nature. The craft-based business located near Lille, in Northern France, designed the collection of lamps in an effort to offer a modern and natural alternative to residential lighting. Found on Cubeme, the three lamps have different heights – one is 122 cm in height, another measures 156 cm and the last has 187 cm in height. Made from natural birch, the support system of the lamp displays a constant reminder of natural elements in any space. A lacquered steel base holds the lamps in place while offering a continuation of the natural birch into the design lines that keep the lamps steady. A simple and chic white lacquered lampshade completes the design of the lamps in a sophisticated and contemporary manner. Traditional Architecture Meets Modern Design: Enclave House Posted: 29 Jun 2011 09:34 AM PDT Hidden behind an existing Queen Anne residence, the modern part of the Enclave House features fantastic living spaces divided by a beautifully landscaped garden while featuring parking facilities in the back of the lot. The front facade has undergone a restoration that avoided modifying the existing structure, look and elevation. Designed by BKK Architects, the Enclave House displays a classy facade, a main living volume, an outdoor relaxation and entertaining area and an office in the back. All these spaces were personalized for the owner’s family to support a comfortable and modern lifestyle. The backside addition features entertaining and living spaces spread over two floors. The 511 square meters are divided into interior spaces that can be transformed to suit the changing needs of the family. A raised pool located in the central courtyard displays a fascinating attraction for the children and adults. The backside volume can become a home office, while the basement can be transformed into a game room or a gym. Interesting Present From Father to Son: Broccoli House Posted: 29 Jun 2011 08:13 AM PDT Today we display an interesting idea that could inspire you to use available resources to create fantastic presents or impress someone close to you with the creativity expressed by this kind of projects. Although there is only one picture, the idea is so interesting that we should try to capture its sentimental value rather than the materialistic feature. The Broccoli House was created by Brock Davis with a simple desire in mind: “I couldn’t build a tree house for my son so I built him a broccoli house instead“. This simple idea was transformed into a fantastic declaration of parental love and I hope that the artist will be soon able to make a full scale tree house for his son. The broccoli was used to replace a real tree and Brock Davis used a craft knife to meticulously carve the tree house out of balsa wood.
