| Original Architectural Geometry: Casey Key House in Florida Posted: 22 Jun 2011 03:55 AM PDT
Casey Key Guest House was designed by TOTeMS Architecture and is located in Florida. According to the architects’ description, “the owner requested a "house in the trees." A small program, including one bedroom, bath, living area with kitchenette, and a loft, is organized to provide privacy between a neighboring property to the north, while offering broad views of the oak hammock, and Intercoastal Waterway. Glulam beams were selected for their ability to enfold the structure around the space. The laminated pine beams, which curve over the entire space, blur the distinction between wall and roof. The result is an open structure to the east and west, yet solid and private to the north. The ground floor includes a small storage room for kayaks, and a covered deck. The loft interior, defined primarily by the curved beams, alludes to the aquatic bay environment, and wooden boat hull construction. Ship lap cypress siding is used to clad the exterior walls and interior curved wall”. Located in an area known for its common floods, the floors had to be elevated. What do you think of the architects’ approach on this project?

| Unusual Art: Exploding Structures by Artist Ben Grasso Posted: 22 Jun 2011 02:47 AM PDT
This is for all the architects and designers out there who felt like blowing things up at least once in their carrier. Artist Ben Grasso creates graphic works featuring decomposing homes. Here are some information from an official review done by Thierry Goldberg Projects, New York: “With a palette that both augments the vividness, and thus the confusion, and even horror, of these unraveled, suspended structures, while amplifying to its sublimity, Grasso lends an unflinching eye in his depictions of the process of decomposition/re-composition. Through the gorgeously scrupulous conveyance of planks and frames and angles, these paintings are dedicated to the graphic description and analysis of a given emblem—the American home. As dissection sheds light on the anatomical relations among components, viewers get a snapshot of total havoc. And yet whatever might be seriously at stake here, the surrealism of the scene is always there to mediate the experience of viewers, and the images never fail to insist on their acutely wrought artifice“. So there you have it: a simple way to enjoy art and a small therapy to suppress whatever negative thoughts your job may inspire!

| A Simple Yet Very Captivating Design: Bambi Chair Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:20 AM PDT
Bambi Chair was designed by Timo Wong and Priscilla Lu form Studio Juju, a studio in Singapore. The chair has a an appealing design, featuring a handmade upholstered cushion that inspires comfort and mildness. Here are a few words from the designers about the product: ” We wanted a backrest that is inviting to the touch. Bambi has a welcoming handle and a generous low seat. We kept in mind the texture of the wood and its construction, creating a continuity of the handle to its legs. The soft upholstered seat compliments the handmade warmth of the beech wood“. Easy to move from one place to another, the chair is a very flexible seating unit, perfect for when you are confronted with an invasion of guests all of a sudden. Its simple (and delightful) appearance make it easy to integrate in a variety of interiors. Did it win you over too?

| When Architecture and Nature Interact: Villa Remshagen Posted: 22 Jun 2011 12:11 AM PDT
Villa Remshagen was designed by Carl-Johan Smedshammar in collaboration with Andres Holmberg Architects and is located in Vallentuna, Sweden. The residence is surrounded by oak trees and sits atop of a small hill, with views to a nearby lake. The exterior of the house is quite appealing, displaying a simple, yet charming geometry. When inside, a wide hallway leads the way while separating the social parts from the sleeping areas. The interiors are spacious and airy, featuring interesting decorative details. We particularly like the giant bookcase with plenty of integrated storage space which gives a nice, warm feel to the whole room. The project also features an outdoor terrace, that is perfect for meditating or for having people over for a drink. Not far away down from the main residence, there is another similar project (of different size, though) that serves as a guest house. Enjoy the photos!

| Sophisticated Residence in Washington State, Perfect for a Holiday Retreat Posted: 21 Jun 2011 09:50 AM PDT
This eye-catching Lake Wenatchee residence was designed by DeForest Architects and is located in Washington State, USA. According to the architects, “the owners spent many seasons on Lake Wenatchee in the Cascade Mountains before finding the perfect spot to build. They came to DeForest with enthusiasm for the design process and a vision of a house that blended seamlessly with the site. Some key themes include: a secret room, sleeping porch, built-in alcoves which make this cabin cozy for two and comfortable for a crowd, a natural mix combining the warmth of wood with low maintenance tile, stone, and composites, clever ideas to accommodate a range of friends and families, a sleeping loft, flex bath and low-maintenance materials“. With a minimalist design and wooden furniture elements, this modern, sophisticated house seems like the perfect holiday retreat.
