| Innovative Chair Recondition: Grandmother’s Chair Posted: 21 Jun 2011 05:49 AM PDT
We came across this splendid combination of modern and classic chair design. Found on Yatzer, the Grandmother’s Chair was revamped using modern materials: “This antique chair is from my grandmother’s store. Although it is an attractive chair with a beautiful silhouette, it is clearly getting old. One leg is broken and the backrest is so damaged that it looks sad. However, I still find the chair attractive. I tried to repair the chair to make it usable again.” And the reparation gave it a new life and an awesome look. The designer, Satoshi Itasaka, redefined the old chair’s lines with the use of a transparent resin casts that mirror the old design. The backrest and damaged leg were repaired without losing the definition of the chair and the memories were kept intact by using modern technology. By rekindling this old chair’s flame, the designer avoided resetting “the memories that accumulated within the object“. Instead, the addition only accentuates the simple beauty of the old object, creating a new life for the damaged chair. The Grandmother’s Chair “suggests that in an age marked by problems associated with excessive production and consumption, we could benefit from a rediscovery of our respect for things from the past.” How do you feel about this idea?

| Spectacular Penthouse Mixing Coziness and Refinement Posted: 21 Jun 2011 03:31 AM PDT
Here is an apartment that displays so much charm and refinement, that it’s hard not to fall for its design. Seen on Skeppsholmen, this crib has no less than 302 square meters and a total of 8 rooms. The focal point of the whole house is a delightful bookcase built in the walls of the living room and complemented by exposed wooden beams. The color combination is very tasteful and in the same time creates a feeling of warmth. We also like the decorative art elements. Paintings and wooden sculptures pleasantly contribute to the unique personality of this place. All the 8 rooms are individualized and no matter where you look, something delightful is bound to catch your eye. The house also features two beautiful roof terraces, positioned symmetrically from the open plan living room (as seen in the sketch below). Enjoy the photos and may all those amazing details give you plenty of inspiration!

| Art Collector’s Apartment in Sydney Harbour, Australia Posted: 21 Jun 2011 02:02 AM PDT
Brooke Aitken Design designed a showcase apartment on Sydney's Circular Quay, Australia. In collaboration with Johnson Pilton Walker (the interior architects for the project), they provided the interior decorations, including all furniture procurement and art placement According to the architects, the clients are significant art collectors and benefactors in Australia and the apartment was built to showcase their collection set on a backdrop of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the Botanical Gardens. Everywhere you look, the apartment is filled up with color and culture. An open plan living room displays good taste in a highly contemporary manner. The color palette is simple and creates an environment that is perfect for relaxation and meditation. The floor to ceiling windows ensure plenty of light and the views from the loft surprise the Australian urban environment. Freshome readers, are your Art Lovers? Then perhaps you can give us your feedback concerning the design of this collector’s apartment.

Looking for a simple yet impressive desk for your home office? Take a look at the Slope Desk designed by Oslo-based Jenk Design Office. For every need, there’s a solution and for anyone, there is a desk design that accomplishes every wish. This desk was created for those seeking the simple yet versatile work style, with an ergonomic feature helping you achieve a correct position. The slightly angled top ensures your concentration and comfort, forcing the design to encompass modern features into a simple shape. This design feature ensures a clean worktop, making it impossible for clutter to add up on the actual work surface. And just to be sure that you can still use it for occasional storage, “two accompanying wedges keep a drink level and stop your pen from rolling away“. Storage areas cleverly hidden offer a “physical barrier between work and home“, allowing you to neatly store your work inside after you have finished it. Two felt lined storage areas have the perfect dimensions to fit a laptop or tablet, so you don’t have to worry about modern work-related gadgets. Available on request, the Slope Desk is made from a mix of birch veneer MDF and plywood, with solid maple legs.

| Smile! Creative Street Art in France by OaKoAk Posted: 20 Jun 2011 10:41 AM PDT
For today we gathered a few street art works that are sure to bring a smile on your face. OaKoAk is a “French artist who likes to play with urban elements”. The result? Cute urban jokes that liven up the gloomy city streets. From the “Chuck Norris Sat Here” broken bench (you guys are probably familiar with all the buzz around Chuck Norris jokes lately, we are certain) to a puzzled Pinocchio and ghosts with brick heads, the array of subjects seems to be never-ending. We really like the artist’s art “improvisations” and believe they are able to make anyone’s day just by encountering them unexpectedly on the street. There is even a design idea that you might have observed (the one with the piano stairs) that could be implemented indoors also. Enjoy the photos and contact the designer if you need any other type of information.

| Cheese-Inspired Design Element: Emmental Stairs Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:29 AM PDT
Some homes feature exquisite design elements that make them reach their full potential. These white, crater- patterned stairs are the focal point of the room. Designed by Croatian interior designer and architect Biljana Jovanovic, the Emmental Stairs evoke a creative approach to necessary architectural elements. Spot-like intrusions were used to create a fun atmosphere for a young family and their two children. The inhabitants of the apartment needed a set of stairs that would “harmonize with the historic ambiance of the apartment and their aesthetic requirements, but also add an extra touch to their living space“. The dining, living space and kitchen were delimitated and accentuated by the construction of the stairs in the middle. Hovering above the floor in a central position of the room, the cheese resembling stairs offer a fun partition of the living space while connecting this floor level to the next. The steep slope was carefully designed, having treads set at alternating angles, to minimize the space taken up by the stairs without compromising the safety issues. Children will use the stairs “as an inspirational toy that boosts their imagination and develops their creativity.” Do you think that the designer did a good job?
