| Contemporary Residence in Sri Lanka by Architect Channa Horombuwa Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:36 AM PDT
This three storied, seven bedroom house, owned by Vijitha & Lalith Lokuge was designed by architect Channa Horombuwa and is located in Boralesgamuwa, Sri Lanka. Here is the information we received from the architect: “This L-shaped house with its tall blind walls cut down the noise and congestion of the main road and fully opens out to the garden designed next to the adjoining open land. The ground floor consists of two bedrooms in addition to the Living, Dining, Pantry, Home theatre room and other service areas. The First floor facilitates, three bedrooms including the master bedroom and their attached bath rooms in addition to the TV lobby and gallery space. The second floor consists of two bedrooms with two bath rooms and a study area. Leading out from the terrace of the second floor is a glass stairway to the roof top garden and bar; a fantastic space for entertaining under the stars.
The main feature of the house is the floating staircase made out of stainless steel and wood. Two straight flights run parallel to each other through the triple height volume in the centre of the house. The large double height living room opens out to the garden and has been located towards the right side of the entrance lobby to maintain privacy. The tile cladded double height back wall of the living room supports the glass panels which touches the roof ceiling to maintain the floating effect of the single sloping roof of the living hall. Use of large glazed panels help to bring lot of day light into the house and as a result the every corner of the house is well lit with reflected sunlight. Direct and indirect light effects maintain a dramatic appearance inside the house at night. Selection of light fittings too has been made to strengthen the modern look of the house.”

Made in England, the Rocking lamps are described by Mineheart: “These playful lamps need no explanation… They simply rock!” Having a beech rocking stand and white cotton shades, the Rocking Lamps offer an innovative alternative to usual lights. This is one of the beautiful things found on Design Milk and we are confident that this lamp can create an enjoyable and fun atmosphere in your home, too. | Spectacular Penthouse Design in Las Vegas by Mark Tracy Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:10 AM PDT
We recently received an eclectic penthouse design from one of our readers, that seems to blend in perfectly with the shiny Las Vegas. Here are the details and the photos the project developers sent us: “Mark Tracy started the design of this project with the intent to use the finest materials on every surface to create a friendly, inviting, colorful, and extravagant design for a penthouse unit in the Veer tower of Las Vegas' modern City Center development. This penthouse's primary features include a 13' tall by 13' wide floor-wall-ceiling glass mosaic in an ocean blue color scheme with embedded images and bordered by a glass veneer tile. In the middle of the centerpiece mosaic hangs a chandelier encased in a blue glass cube. A "Blue Louise" granite table floats off the kitchen island acting first as a bar elevation and then seamlessly dropping to a lower elevation where it serves as the units primary dining area. ![]() The color palette of light greys blues and greens is accented by 120 linear feet of RGB LED lighting embedded around the perimeter of ceiling throughout the entire penthouse. The master bedroom shows off a 13' tall c-shaped bed of Italian porcelain tile complete with its own chandelier. Beside the bed hangs a custom chain curtain featuring Banksy's signature tag which divides the bedroom from the master bath. The living and main party area is crowned with a one-of-a-kind mirrored ceiling made of triangular shaped mirrors each separated by ceiling beams reflecting the lighting effects of the unit and the neon shining through the windows from the Las Vegas strip outside.” How do you appreciate the design of this penthouse? Do you find it appealing or too “exotic”?

| Fantastic Renovation Displaying Modern Colours and Pleasant Design Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:22 AM PDT
The need for a contemporary and comfortable home pushed the young family living in this home to consider turning their hundred-year-old Northwest Portland house into a modern retreat from stressful everyday life. They approached interior designer Jessica Helgerson to create a fresh face for their residence. Working with a palette of whites and cool greys throughout the house, the designer created an open space that looks amazing as a whole, but looks even better when taken separate. Each space was carefully renovated – the kitchen on the first floor was connected to the dining room with the help of two-sided glass cabinets, while the bathroom on the same floor was transformed into a beautiful powder room. The second floor was divided to fit the large master bedroom and bathroom and a storage area at the top of the stairs became the perfect place to stylishly hide a washing machine and a drier. The office was placed in the old attic and displays a bright and cheery atmosphere. Laser-cut mirrors in the entry hall accentuate and reflect the modern lifestyle of its inhabitants. The entire residence feels like a breath of fresh air, don’t you think?
