This three storied, seven bedroom house, owned by Vijitha & Lalith Lokuge was designed by architect Channa Horombuwa and is located in Boralesgamuwa, Sri Lanka. Here is the information we received from the architect:  “This L-shaped house with its tall blind walls cut down the noise and congestion of the main road and fully opens out to the garden designed next to the adjoining open land. The ground floor consists of two bedrooms in addition to the Living, Dining, Pantry, Home theatre room and other service areas. The First floor facilitates, three bedrooms including the master bedroom and their attached bath rooms in addition to the TV lobby and gallery space. The second floor consists of two bedrooms with two bath rooms and a study area. Leading out from the terrace of the second floor is a glass stairway to the roof top garden and bar; a fantastic space for entertaining under the stars.

The main feature of the house is the floating staircase made out of stainless steel and wood. Two straight flights run parallel to each other through the triple height volume in the centre of the house. The large double height living room opens out to the garden and has been located towards the right side of the entrance lobby to maintain privacy. The tile cladded double height back wall of the living room supports the glass panels which touches the roof ceiling to maintain the floating effect of the single sloping roof of the living hall. Use of large glazed panels help to bring lot of day light into the house and as a result the every corner of the house is well lit with reflected sunlight. Direct and indirect light effects maintain a dramatic appearance inside the house at night. Selection of light fittings too has been made to strengthen the modern look of the house.”

Spectacular Penthouse Design in Las Vegas by Mark Tracy

We recently received an eclectic penthouse design from one of our readers, that seems to blend in perfectly with the shiny Las Vegas. Here are the details and the photos the project developers sent us: “Mark Tracy started the design of this project with the intent to use the finest materials on every surface to create a friendly, inviting, colorful, and extravagant design for a penthouse unit in the Veer tower of Las Vegas' modern City Center development. This penthouse's primary features include a 13' tall by 13' wide floor-wall-ceiling glass mosaic in an ocean blue color scheme with embedded images and bordered by a glass veneer tile. In the middle of the centerpiece mosaic hangs a chandelier encased in a blue glass cube. A "Blue Louise" granite table floats off the kitchen island acting first as a bar elevation and then seamlessly dropping to a lower elevation where it serves as the units primary dining area.

The color palette of light greys blues and greens is accented by 120 linear feet of RGB LED lighting embedded around the perimeter of ceiling throughout the entire penthouse. The master bedroom shows off a 13' tall c-shaped bed of Italian porcelain tile complete with its own chandelier. Beside the bed hangs a custom chain curtain featuring Banksy's signature tag which divides the bedroom from the master bath. The living and main party area is crowned with a one-of-a-kind mirrored ceiling made of triangular shaped mirrors each separated by ceiling beams reflecting the lighting effects of the unit and the neon shining through the windows from the Las Vegas strip outside.” How do you appreciate the design of this penthouse? Do you find it appealing or too “exotic”?

How to Use Dark Furniture to Add Drama to your Decor

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 01:39 AM PDT

If you've ever walked into a room and felt instant drama and mystique, it could be the appeal of dark furniture. Similar to the magnetic pull of dark walls, and decor, furniture can add drama to a room and make the inhabitants feel mysterious, sexy, and sleek. Many love dark furniture because it commands attention in a room, and little decor is needed around it. If you're trying to change or create a space that is dramatic and compelling, look at these tips for using dark furniture.
dark furn bed e1290683471166 How to Use Dark Furniture to Add Drama to your Decor

  • Center of attention: Let's face it, a dark piece of furniture can sit all by itself in a room and provide all the drama you need. When paired up with other furniture, area rugs and wall art, your space will instantly feel like you've stepped into a new and dramatic world. Consider using lighter textiles around your dark furniture to balance the room. If too many dark items are in a room it will feel heavy and weighted, and inhabitants will feel uneasy in your space.
  • Space and light: Believe it or not dark furniture commands light and space around it. Similarly to the previous tip, dark furniture needs to have ample light to soak up its beauty and mystique. If you use dark furniture, use the minimal amount of pieces to serve your function and the space of the room. Too many pieces will look over cluttered and uninviting.

  • Don't forget comfort: Comfort should still be at the forefront of your mind when choosing furniture. The look and appeal of dark furniture is captivating, but how comfortable it looks AND feels is important. Often times we spend more time making the furniture appeal visually and forget that your comfort and your guests should come first. Take your time when choosing furniture to test it out and then choose the dark colors that your love.

  • Dark doesn't have to be black: For many homes, the thought of black furniture is too stark and is not appealing for them. Dark furniture doesn't have to be black. Consider using dark neutrals such as grays, browns, and blues. If you prefer lighter colors to counterbalance the dark, mix and match furniture pieces to bring the balance that you crave. Depending on your space, conversation areas can pair dark furniture with light accessories to differentiate between separate areas for visual and conversational ease.

Your home can use dark furniture to add drama and dimension to a space instantly. Depending on your decorative style, decide how if you want your finishes surrounding your furniture to compliment or contrast your dark furniture. If you choose similar wall coloring to the furniture, the furniture will seem to disappear, and lighter contrasting walls will make the furniture stand out. Every home and style is different, and you choose what resonates with your style. Whichever your choice, dark furniture will bring a mysterious ambiance that you didn't realize was missing.

Freshome reader's do you love or hate dark furniture? Some feel it is cold and impersonal, while others love the dramatic appeal. What do you think?

Fantastic Renovation Displaying Modern Colours and Pleasant Design

jessica helgerson design Fantastic Renovation Displaying Modern Colours and Pleasant Design

The need for a contemporary and comfortable home pushed the young family living in this home to consider turning their hundred-year-old Northwest Portland house into a modern retreat from stressful everyday life. They approached interior designer Jessica Helgerson to create a fresh face for their residence. Working with a palette of whites and cool greys throughout the house, the designer created an open space that looks amazing as a whole, but looks even better when taken separate. Each space was carefully renovated – the kitchen on the first floor was connected to the dining room with the help of two-sided glass cabinets, while the bathroom on the same floor was transformed into a beautiful powder room. The second floor was divided to fit the large master bedroom and bathroom and a storage area at the top of the stairs became the perfect place to stylishly hide a washing machine and a drier. The office was placed in the old attic and displays a bright and cheery atmosphere. Laser-cut mirrors in the entry hall accentuate and reflect the modern lifestyle of its inhabitants. The entire residence feels like a breath of fresh air, don’t you think?

Indulging in Relaxation and Modern Design: Emma Sitting Object

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:08 AM PDT

Emma Indulging in Relaxation and Modern Design: Emma Sitting ObjectA surprising effect can be acquired by combining a bench and a chair. In this case, the Emma Chair claims its place in the spotlight with a simple and contemporary design that unites two kinds of seating units – a chair placed on top of a bench frame. The non-intrusive design of the Emma Sitting Object fits into any home and offers a modern approach to seating unit designs. Darmstadt – based studio Kieser Spath designed Emma “for the quiet moments of life. You can use it alone or share it with other people“. Created for usual activities like reading a book, working on your notebook or even as a place to sit down and tie your shoes, the bench-like chair offers comfort and relaxation after a hard day. The German designers used ash-wood and a cushioned seat shell to create the Emma and the result is a well-fitted, balanced design. Enjoy the photos!
