Bright Australian Retreat Featuring Beautiful Textured Materials Posted: 27 May 2011 06:44 AM PDT The Esuoh House was designed as the perfect retreat from the cluttered urban environment. One can sunbathe and enjoy lemonades on the sun bed or watch a movie under the stars, just like at the drive-in movies. Hofman and Brown Architects were the ones that designed the Esuoh House located in Yallingup, Western Australia. The Australian weather is perfect for this 2.009 square meters residential construction and the bright sun helps accentuate a beautiful collection of textured building materials: grey stabilised rammed limestone walls, waxed dado plaster, polished concrete, aluminium, glass and stone. The architects say that: “The aim was to enjoy the connection with the adjacent bush landscape while also creating a more private "internal" connection to the outdoors, with a protected north-east "outdoor room" incorporating the plunge pool and outdoor cinema, framed by the enclosing stone walls.” All the rooms have found shelter on one floor, covered by a low pitched skillion roof that collects rainwater. The north elevation sheltering four bedrooms benefits from a fully glazed wall that opens up to a long verandah accessible from each bedroom. I am sure that this gorgeous Australian home can inspire you to create your own comfortable retreat.

Modern and Sustainable Recreational Residence in Canada Posted: 27 May 2011 04:31 AM PDT Elenko Residence was designed by CEI Architecture and is located in British Columbia, Canada, overlooking the Osoyoos lake. The modern crib was especially developed in order to serve as a recreational retreat for the owners. Set amidst a charming natural environment, the house features large windows and terraces for a good indoor outdoor relationship. According to the architects, “the building form is reminiscent of the early modernists. The building aesthetic is intended to be a simple and functional solution that responds to the semi-desert climate, the project's budget and the waterfront context. Due to the constraints of the site, spaces were stacked on one another to create a two-storey home, with a roof garden for relaxing or entertaining. Living spaces such as the living room, dining room and kitchen are located on the main floor, offering easy access to the lake. A guest bedroom and washroom are also located on the main floor. The living spaces benefit from the east exposure, which allows the morning sun to penetrate the spaces. In the evening the harsh summer sun is blocked by the solid south wall. The second floor includes all bedrooms, including the laundry and a recreation room off the roof garden.” Sustainability features include ingenius shading systems, radiant floor heating and natural ventilation.

Mind-Blowing Dice Portrait Emphasizing on the Randomness of Life [Video] Posted: 27 May 2011 03:13 AM PDT This amazing modern art idea is dedicated to artist and designer Tobias Wong who passed away last year, at the age of 35, after living 13,138 days. His friend Frederick McSwain built this commemorative portrait using exactly 13,138 dice to emphasize on life and its hazards. “The idea of a dice itself was appropriate—the randomness of life. It felt like [a medium] he would use. Because [Tobias] was a very street-level force, I thought it was appropriate [to install] the portrait on the floor. Its not something I wanted to suspend on the wall; I wanted it to be right there on the floor where you almost interact with it. The idea of every decision you make and everything you've done in your life, defines who you are. All of those days symbolically makes up the image of Tobi.”- Frederick stated. The dice were simply laid out on the floor without using any kind of adhesive. Have a look at the time lapse video below for a better understanding of how this incredible portrait was achieved. – (via – Core77 )

Harp Inspired Sculptural Armchair by Jaime Hayon Posted: 27 May 2011 01:37 AM PDT We do not know if it was the harmony of the harp or its unmistakable, delightful sounds that inspired this design. What we can tell for sure is that Arpa Chair by Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon has an intriguing metallic support that could naturally make one think of musical strings. Imposing in size and appearance, this chair found on Blog Deco Design brings a unique personality to any modern interior and becomes the focal point of the room it is placed in. According to the producers, this piece of furniture “reinvents the classic club wing armchair as a sculptural form. With a curvaceous metal skeleton, the Arpa is inspired by the harp. Made from lacquered steel in different widths, the Arpa's upholstered seat includes a layer of feather for extra comfort, creating a counterpoint between the hard structure and the soft seating”. We are looking forward to your impressions on this “musical chair”; how would you blend it in a modern decor?

Elegant Showroom in Vienna Displaying Office Furniture Designs Posted: 26 May 2011 09:16 AM PDT This elegant showroom in Vienna was designed by SOLID Architecture for Bene office furniture manufacturer. Here is more from the press release we received: “The area of the showroom is extending, strip-like, alongside the exterior façade of a newly erected building. SOLID architecture was commissioned to develop the design of the showroom on the ground floor as well as of the vertically extending space. The visitor is to be met by a lively and varied path leading through the world Bene, and, simultaneously, the visitor is to be welcomed by a site with its own individual identity and unique character and features. The showroom is the stage, on which Bene is going to make its presentation. The main entrance to the showroom is constituted by a semi-public entrance hall, which may also be used by the tenants of the other office floors. (photographer Günter Kresser) The entire back wall of the showroom is cladded with panels that are covered by textile fabrics, thus forming its spatial backbone. The panels are of a modular configuration, which makes it possible to substitute one for the other. The backbone comprises the room, in this way limiting the room. In the area that is also used for events, the panels are covered in addition by a sound-absorbing acoustic inlay. The basic color of the backbone is a dark and warm brown, combined with pale gray and white panels. Individual colored panels create additional highlights. By means of these panels, the backbone may be adapted in color to the alternating scenes created in the showroom.” We find this design delightfully sober-therefore suited for an office furniture company, but are looking forward to your reactions as well.
