James Bond Movie Stage: The Elrod House by John Lautner Posted: 25 May 2011 06:50 AM PDT Take a look at this fascinating looking home that seems sprung out of a Sci-Fi movie. The correlation is not far away from the truth, since this residence designed by John Lautner was in fact the stage for the famous Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever" produced in 1971. Located in the Southridge enclave, Palm Springs, California, the house amazes due to its unworldly architecture. A conical dome is the main recognizable structure that most Bond fans are sure to remember, even if this iconic building was built in the 60′s. The rocks in the site were incorporated into the interior design of the Elrod House with stunning effects. This way an inciting atmosphere was created, making one inevitably think of great adventures. This impressive and unusual looking crib has no less than five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, a master suite, a roof top entertainment deck and many, many more. The residence is currently up for sale here for $13,890,000. Seems like a fair price for a James Bond movie stage?

Versatile Countertop with Inner Glow: ThinkGlass Posted: 25 May 2011 05:21 AM PDT ThinkGlass was recently unveiled at the National Kitchen Bath Show in Las Vegas and is a stunning 4-inch glass countertop that “looks like the luminescent ocean” and actually glows from within. Here is more information from the producers over at Jennings and Company: The powerful LED lights embedded inside give the glass countertop a radiance. ThinkGlass offers a variety of light colors and even the ability to create a "light show" via remote control with special effects such as flashing and fading lights to create an ambiance. ThinkGlass has quickly become a leader in the thermoforming industry by pioneering a versatile technique that allows the creation of new or repetitive textures at a very low molding cost. This process allows the creation of glass slabs without thickness constraints opening the door to all kinds of design possibilities that far exceed anything that can be accomplished with stone, granite or marble. The product has several textures and can serve as glass countertop in a bar or at home, as a decorative art object, can replace an indoor fountain and so on. The possibilities are practically endless. Do you have any other examples of original countertops?

Stunning Ondulating Home in the Azores: House on the Flight of Birds Posted: 25 May 2011 04:03 AM PDT House on the Flight of Birds was designed by Portuguese architect Bernardo Rodrigues and is located on S. Michael Island in the Azores. With a highly original architecture consisting of curved volumes combined with unexpected sheltering panels and odd-shaped windows, this residence is truly spectacular. According to the architects, “the microclimate of this farmland offers frequent wind and showers so the first design strategy was to block those winds with a wall, offer diverse patios and covered courtyards on the ground floor protected from rain and open all living space to the natural green around by using glass walls receded from the exterior. On the upper-floor there are the private rooms more enclosed and protected.” We were charmed by the roof terrace, a perfect place for relaxation where the inhabitants can enjoy views over the island’s shore. A creative architecture solution for sheltering a private residence, don’t you agree? [Photography is by Iwan Baan]

Unique Long and Narrow Residence Spanning Across a Ravine Posted: 25 May 2011 02:19 AM PDT The Bridge House promises an introduction into contemporary living. Designed by Stanley Saitowitz, the extraordinary rectangular residential structure was built using bridge modelling techniques that ensure the residence is functional and safe. The natural landscape helped the architect create a connection to the surroundings by opening up the internal spaces to the outside world. Located in Marin, California, the Bridge House dazzles with its eternal connection to the landscape – everything this house stands for was inspired by the natural surroundings. The hill based property allowed the architect to create a long and narrow residence that rests on two sides of the hillside, creating a bridge-like house structure. The rocky ravine supports the long structure of the house that lies from east to west. Exterior Cor-Ten cladding keeps the residence looking modern and beautifully contrasts with the extensive use of glass. All the glass insertions that can be seen between the metal sheets offer the inhabitants exquisite views of the surroundings. A pool that runs perpendicular to the housing structure completes the exterior features of this amazing house. Don’t you just love how architects can transform the landscape to fit unique residential structures?

Innovative Water Filtering Kitchen Faucet: Mywell Posted: 25 May 2011 01:06 AM PDT The Mywell Faucet was created by Orsodesign and has the ability to filter water with amazing results. According to the press release the developers sent us, “the filtering faucet allows individual homeowners to treat their tap water. It is one of the most sanitary drinking water systems available, designed to deliver clean, healthy drinking water right from the tap. This innovative design works with a multi–stage water filtering system which is integrated into the faucet, delivering fresh natural pure drinking water of a premium quality. The Mywell faucet offers also a built-in Smart Controller which warns when the water filter should be replaced. It is also environmentally friendly by reducing plastic bottle waste.” We believe it was high time for these type of designs to take off and be sold at a large scale, especially in a world where healthy food and water seem to be scarce. The filter faucet costs 399 Euros and is available for purchase online here.
