Picturesque Wood & Stone Residence Inspiring a Serene Way of Living Posted: 24 May 2011 07:40 AM PDT John Dodge Compound is a delightful looking residence designed by Carney Logan Burke Architects and located in Wilson, Wyoming, close to the Snake River. Its surrounding landscape is vivid and diverse, consisting of dense forests and a beautiful open meadow. The architects explain:”by emphasizing heavy stone and concrete masses, the design effects an expression of permanence suggestive of the traditional European country chateau. As a counterpoint to the dense materiality and massing of forms, the residence breaks down into three discrete volumes for garage, main living quarters (including a yoga studio), and master suite. Large expanses of glass lead to outdoor terraces, both elements serving to reflect the idiom of outdoor living in the American West. The residence reinforces its connection to the natural environment through an integration of architecture and landscaping: a waterway extends from a pond and creates a contemplative focal point for the home's entry.” Sustainable features for this home include geothermal heat pumps, radiant flooring, responsibly harvested lumber, high-performance windows and insulated concrete forms. Looking forward to your opinions and suggestions about this home’s design.

Witty and Playful “Out of Balance” Stools by Thorsten Franck Posted: 24 May 2011 06:17 AM PDT Need an uncommon chair set for original coffee breaks? The witty Out of Balance stools by German designer Thorsten Franck could be the unconventional solution you were looking for. These chairs may not be extremely comfortable, but they sure make up for that with their playful design. According to the project developers, the stools were built like egg shells with a weight at the bottom for balance: “OUT_OF_BALANCE is a lounging stool for rocking, sitting & relaxing. the stool stands flexible like a milking stool just on one leg – using the principles of a tumbler. the three dimensional base body is formed in a light weight construction out of oak veneer, using a special 3d forming technology.” Even though we find this design clever and highly appealing, we wonder how many adults would “fall for it” and believe a special collection for children will be just as much (if not a lot more) appreciated. What do you think?

How to Enhance your Kitchen or Bath with Copper Accents Posted: 24 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT Over the years, metal accents in the home were a status symbol and a way to show off a family's fortune and prestige. In modern day homes, the presence of metals are still a well sought after amenity, and the finishes range from cool stainless steel to golden copper accents. Modern Home in Gothenburg Featuring Impressive Interior Arrangements Posted: 24 May 2011 02:41 AM PDT This fantastic home located in Gothenburg, Sweden impresses due to a delightful interior design. According to Skeppsholmen, the residence has no less than 9 rooms and a surface of 400 square meters. Integrated within a secluded natural garden with unobstructed views towards the sea, it seems that this crib was especially designed for a long, long holiday by the beach. The house has an open floor plan with great connections between its various social areas and is large enough to accommodate two families (with separate living zones, of course). High ceilings, skylights and generous windows turn this place into an airy and well illuminated home. The impressive entrance area features a small bar, a socializing area with a comfortable sofa and chairs, a fireplace and an aesthetic stairway leading towards the upper floor. We particularly like the master bedroom with own walk-in closet and the large bathroom with both shower and whirlpool tub. The residence also features a gym room, a sauna and a wine cellar. The first floor is linked with the pool area, perfect for a quick swim and a sun bath. Enjoy the photos and let us know if there is anything you would change about this home’s interior design. Modern Light for the Dining Table with Seamless Design: The Juicy Pendant Light Posted: 24 May 2011 01:15 AM PDT The Juicy Pendant Light makes use of great design and the natural desire for light that creates a fantastic ambiance. Kasper Salto & Thomas Sigsgaard designed the pendant light for Danish manufacturer Lightyears. The idea behind this pendant light design is one that resulted after taking into account one single piece of furniture – the dining table – and one instinctive desire completed by modern features – gourmet food: “The basis for creating the first pendant for Lightyears was concrete: To design the optimum, energy-friendly pendant for the dining table, which provides the table with concentrated, non-dazzling light. The pendant must take up as little space as possible, and the shape must be experienced as being “flat”.” Thus the perfect non-invasive pendant light for the dining table was born. Stylishly hanging above one of the most important moments together with your family, the Juicy Pendant Light features a seamless design perfectly integrated in a modern home: the wire, cone and shade merge to shape a fantastic light. What more could you want from a pendant light for the dining table?

Complex Residence in India with a Jaw-Dropping Modern Design Posted: 23 May 2011 07:34 AM PDT Rajiv Saini & Associates redesigned an old family home located in Hyderabad, India. Although they initially meant to keep most of the original elements intact, the residence currently has a very modern feel, thus a completely new character. Here are just some of the transformations mentioned by the project developers: “Additional rooms got cantilevered over existing structure ( for example the copper clad gym overlooking the front garden is a newly added cantilevered steel structure,as are the guest rooms and the steel and glass study attached to the master suite ) , redundant spaces got axed / demolished, new spaces were created wherever possible ( the new dining room was created by enclosing a part of the rear garden ) ,the grand spiral marble staircase fell a victim to the reorganizing, replaced instead by a sleek metal and stone one, in a different part of the house. The 10′ diameter hole left in the sloping slab as a result of this got transformed into a skylight, and the roof got sheathed in a layer of black slate!“ There are plenty of photos below showcasing the diversity of this home, so we invite you to have a look and get inspired!
