Combining Tradition and Fine Wine: Queens Lane Silo & Shop Posted: 23 May 2011 04:19 AM PDT The Queens Lane Wine Silo & Shop was designed by Carney Logan Burke Architects and is located in Jackson, Wyoming. According to the architects’ description, “the main residence of log, stone, and timber draws its inspiration from early twentieth century National Parks lodge architecture, whereas the two additional buildings on the property (the shop/office and the silo) serve as a counterpoint to traditional notions of the western log structure. The wine silo comprises the final addition to the compound and it stands adjacent to the shop. Because the compound lies in the Snake River flood plain, a standard wine cellar was incompatible with the building site. Borrowing from agrarian structures, the design team arrived at the silo form as an alternative, elevated storage system. The interior, inspired by a wine cask, is characterized by reclaimed fir woodwork and a spiral staircase that accesses carefully displayed wine bottles organized around the silo's perimeter. The stair ascends to the roof where both the wine collection and views of the natural surroundings can be admired.” Freshome readers, how do you like to organize your fine wines?

Spectacular Lighting Design: SKLI Max Pendant Posted: 23 May 2011 03:27 AM PDT We received an intriguing lighting design from FINE Architects, perfect for large rooms with a need for dramatic lighting effects. According to the press release, “this hanging fixture measures approximately 8-feet long and 2-feet wide, and has three stainless LED lamp holders with cable supports for a sensuous plane of fused glass, which has a texture reminiscent of wrinkled silk. The stainless lamp holders are in fact recycled stainless martini shakers! The fixture distributes light in two ways: first, some light is reflected up to the ceiling; second, soft light filters down through the fused glass plane. The texture of the glass is achieved by placing hundreds of 1/16" glass rods on top of a clear glass base sheet, and then fusing the glass in a high temperature kiln. The three LED lamps are highly energy-efficient, consuming only 6 watts each. There is a magic that transpires when glass is struck by light, it is almost as if the glass surface becomes light itself.” Looks appealing?

Imposing Residence Displaying Unconventional Interior Connections Posted: 23 May 2011 02:09 AM PDT Casa Paredes Tres Ocho was designed by Hernandez Silva Arquitectos and is located in Tlajomulco de Zuñiga city, Mexico. This modern two-storey residence offers a high level of privacy, by being almost completely “shut”. At least this is the impression someone gets by taking a stroll in front of it. But here is some counter information about the building’s structure from the architects: “The terraces are undoubtedly the most comfortable spaces; the house has the flexibility to become a large terrace of great height, windows linked to central space, room and terrace, are hidden to open to the outside by a pond vegetation (central) and one temporal (outside). This allows the terrace to interrelate without any obstacles to the garden. Kitchen and dining room are linked to entrance level; the first is located towards the street with an output window of the facade which extends the internal perspective, the second looks over the terrace and the central area, receiving natural air from the side garden. The entire second level is connected by a single bridge topped by a subtle translucent staircase that leads to the top level which is the meditation room, working as a large gazebo on the hill, creating an atmosphere conducive to reflection“. How do you appreciate the interior design of this home?

Spectacular Lake View Residence in New Zealand by Daniel Marshall Architects Posted: 23 May 2011 12:21 AM PDT Lake View Residence was designed by Daniel Marshall Architects and is located in New Zealand. According to the description of the project developers, the residence consists of two pavilions sheltered by expansive roof forms, linked via a kitchen causeway. These are orientated around a pool courtyard and open out to views over an extinct volcano cone lake. Nothing short of spectacular, this home is integrated in a fabulous natural environment. The large infinity pool seems perfect for relaxation during warm summer days and the modern patio furniture looks quite inviting. Even though the inhabitants of this residence are probably tempted to spend most of their time outdoors, the inside of the residence received just as much attention from the architects and nothing was left to chance. The interior design is clean and modern, with highly welcoming decors. We particularly like the unique book shelves from the living room and believe you will find them inspiring as well.

Secluded Residence in Brazil Set Amidst Luscious Palm Trees Posted: 22 May 2011 05:26 AM PDT Two rectangular reinforced concrete blocks sitting atop of each other make up the primary architecture of the Paraty House. Located between SĂŁo Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, on one of the islands near Paraty City, the residence cantilevers 8 meters outwards from the mountainside. Reaching towards the Brazilian coast, the residence is an exceptional secluded home where the inhabitants arrive after by boat. The topography found here sustains the architecture of the house in a successful attempt to offer the inhabitants a modern residence that penetrates nature to make room for comfortable living. The luscious corridor that runs along the coastline offers the Paraty House extensive views of the beach and water. Designed by Marcio Kogan, the two floor residence features the living room, kitchen and service area on the lower floor and bedrooms on the second volume. The roof acts like a mixture of outside places that offer the best of nature: an observation deck, green terraces and gardens for herbs, medicinal plants and sculptures. Art can also be found indoors, where the inhabitants have gathered a collection of works by well-known artists. Every detail of the extraordinary residence comes as a modern addition to nature: from the textured exterior walls to the extensive use of glass. Enjoy the pictures and explore the connection between humans and wild nature.

Modern Tropical Design Mixed with Traditional Thai Elements: Casas del Sol Posted: 21 May 2011 03:54 AM PDT Casas del Sol is an amazing design project and a fascinating retreat, designed and owned by Christina Saenz de Santamaria. Here is the information she sent us:” With a desire to offer a refreshing new definition of the luxury beach bungalow experience, Casas del Sol has officially opened on the island of Koh Tao, Thailand. Created by Australian Interior Designer, Christina Saenz de Santamaria, these contemporary villas have embraced a new concept known as 'Boutique Beach Chic', which means understated luxury within a modern tropical design that captures the sensory island experience of sea, sun and stars. Casas del Sol are five individually designed beach villas that offer self-catered accommodation in an ideal location of the island that is both central and convenient yet private and tranquil. Each two-bedroom villa offers views of the open ocean, island and sunsets, and four of the five villas have a private swimming pool on the terrace. The fundamental design of the villas was inspired by the tropical climate of Thailand that blends both the indoor and outdoor environments together with the use of an outdoor terrace and open-plan living. Natural ventilation was an important element for cooling in the tropical heat with high ceilings, windows and large terrace doors. A major style influence to the villas was the Mediterranean culture due to villa ownership from Spain. The crisp white walls and use of polished concrete is a direct echo of the modernized fincas of the Spanish Balearic Islands. However care was taken to incorporate local Thai elements such as native timber details and products. Furthermore, the use of molded polished concrete features for elements such as sofa bases, bed bases and wet areas prove to be easy to clean surfaces for rental villas.” There are plenty of beautiful photos to get inspired from so enjoy!
