World’s Most Imposing Wooden Structure: Metropol Parasol in Spain Posted: 18 May 2011 05:46 AM PDT The Metropol Parasol, Sevilla’s newest landmark, was copleted in April 2011 and according to Yatzer, will serve as an archaeological site, will accommodate a farmers’ market, an elevated plaza as well as multiple bars and restaurants. The dimensions of this giant waffle-like structure are truly impressive: a building area of 5,000 square meters, a total floor area of 12,670 square meters, a height of 28.50 and 4 levels. The costs for such a city-symbol? 90 Million Euro. All these make the Metropol Parasol in Spain the world’s largest wooden structure. Designed by by J. MAYER H. Architects, the project composed of undulating parasols is part of the redesigning process of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon and is sure to attract plenty of visitors. We are anxious to find out what is your personal opinion on this structure. [Photos by David Franck]

Modern Chilean Residence Taking In the Spectacle of Nature Posted: 18 May 2011 04:18 AM PDT The modern residence was designed by Schmidt Aquitectos Asociados and is located in Lo Curro, Santiago. The gentle slope of the site is covered with a forest of eucalyptus trees planted 30 years ago and crossed by an irrigation canal. It faces north and has a front view of the southern slope of the hill with vegetation, and a side view of the area east of the city. This site brings together the best of central Chile, in addition to being just minutes away from major highways. The owners wanted a “small, but cozy home”, so the architects respected their decision and envisioned a home made of boxes placed on the ground, turning the inhabitants into spectators of nature. To make the house comfortable and to dilute the boundary between inside and outside, natural textures such as stone walls and wood floors were used. The floor to ceiling windows provide amazing views over the surrounding landscape. Have a look!

Lucky Japanese Architecture: Clover House by Katsuhiro Miyamoto Posted: 18 May 2011 02:06 AM PDT Are you a superstitious person? Then may this residence with an interior resembling a four-leave clover bring you only fortunate inspiring moments. The highly original Clover House was designed by Katsuhiro Miyamoto & Associates and is located in Nishinomiya-City. According to the architects’ description, “a cloverleaf hall with 4.6 meters ceiling height is a common space for the family, and following this space, there are some laterally excavated spaces that looks like a “Modong”, meaning a Chinese traditional underground house. Three loft alcoves on the ground level are private bedrooms. Moreover, each bedroom relates to the exterior space. One can approach directly to their own bedrooms through the outside stairs. In structure, a matter of great interest is how to resist sliding caused by earth pressure of adjacent lots on the north and east side. 9 mm thickness steel plate is used as both a mold and finishing material. The mold is filled with concrete so that resistance to the pressure is gravitationally solved. The steel plate used for the finishing side was prefabricated dividing it into 16 blocks, and all of the joints were merged for extra resistance”. Enjoy the creativity of this “lucky” home design as well as its clean lines and minimalist, Japan-worthy interiors! [Photography by James Silverman]

Kids Locker That Never Gets Messy: Training Dresser by Peter Bristol Posted: 17 May 2011 11:50 PM PDT Designer Peter Bristol came up with an original idea that can help kids everywhere be organized when it comes to their clothes. Sounds like scenario sprung out of a fantasy movie? Have a look at this simple, yet very practical children’s locker. The items imprinted on each drawer are enough to create a minimum interaction with any naughty kid. This type of dresser will definitely make them think twice about where to place their pants, socks and so on. Could you imagine not having to clean the children’s room three times in a day? The product is available in two different designs, one for girls and one for boys. Hand crafted by assembling several screws, pins, staples and glue, this design could prove to be a real time saver for both children and adults. Imagine if this idea could be applied when it comes to ladies’ lockers. What do you think- would this type of dresser be useful in your home?
