| Flawless Modern Design and Spiritual Simplicity: Matryoshka House Posted: 09 May 2011 04:17 AM PDT
Matryoshka House was designed by Architect David Jameson and is located in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Obeyng the unwritten rules of the Matryoshka concept, the house is comprised of series of volumes situated one inside of the other. According to the architects’ description, “at the core, a suspended meditation chamber acts as the physical and spiritual center of the project. The internal energy of the meditation chamber is encapsulated within an open glowing frame. An alternating tread stair engages the participant to deliberatley ascend the threshold to the meditation chamber. The meditation chamber is surrounded by a wooden container which encases the living areas of the house. This shell is in turn cradled by stucco walls serving as a protective layer and grounding the house to the earth. The in-between spaces of the nested volumes are strategically sliced to allow the sun to protect lines of light withing.” It is great to see a residence that amazes due to its simplicity and flawless design rather than its impressive dimensions and we are looking forward to post more similar projects on Freshome. Needless to say, any help from you in this direction is welcomed.

| Bringing an Mid-Century Building to Life: 1305 Ranch Remodel in Aspen Posted: 09 May 2011 01:54 AM PDT
We recently received an impressive mid-century ranch remodel from Rowland+Broughton Architecture and Urban Design, a project located in Aspen, Colorado. Here is the information the architects provided: “The remodel of this mid-century ranch house in an established Aspen neighborhood takes the opportunity to reuse sixty percent of the original roof and walls and reworks the floor and roof plans to capitalize on the best features of the existing structure. Raising the roofline and adding clerestory windows and skylights flood the living spaces and master suite with natural light. Removing walls in the kitchen, living room and dining room create a generous and flowing open floor plan. Adding an entire wall of exterior glass doors to the centralized living room gives all of the public spaces in the house a strong connection to, and views of the park-like back yard. A rooftop terrace adds additional space for entertaining, relaxing and taking in mountain views.” Freshome readers, seen any offline interesting home conversions lately?

| Urban Reminders: Mini Concrete Block Towers by Evol Posted: 08 May 2011 11:26 PM PDT
Celebrating the city can be an inspirational gift from artists. Berlin based street artist EVOL took a chance and transformed small architectural elements of the city into mini concrete-like block towers. Electric boxes, small planters, garbage cans, concrete chairs and other infrastructure elements received an urban makeover that reminds us of soviet-style concrete buildings. By exposing the past of architecture, the artist tried a simple method of awareness and managed to reach a large number of people with his art. Printed as a recurring pattern of small windows, the art covering some city elements has a few mini inhabitants that break the self-imposed rules of boring repetition. The prints were cut and pasted throughout European cities, creating islands of the past that stand out in the streets. Inhabitat discovered the artist we present today and his works will be kept in our memories, although they do not last for long on the streets, being tear down by patrolling policemen.
