| Inspiring Modern Home in Aspen with a Charming Interior Design Posted: 16 Feb 2011 03:45 AM PST The Scholl residence was developed by Studio B Architects and is located in Aspen, Colorado. You are looking at an imposing residence that has no less than 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 6000 square feet. Here are some words from the architects concerning this project: The clients dwell between Miami and Aspen and are avid collectors of videography and photography. They requested a solution and an architecture that would exhibit their expanding and revolving collection. The exterior is composed of custom zinc panels, sand-blasted concrete, aluminum window/door glazing system and tempered glass railings. The interiors consist of darkened oak flooring, cantilevered pickled oak stairs and floors, European engineered cabinetry, Carerra marble, porcelain tile shower enclosures and integral plaster walls and ceilings.
As for the home structure, we found out that the lower level is completely below grade and houses the formal gallery space, large wine cellar and provides two guest suites with an attached massage room. The entry level offers the client's office, a guest bedroom, laundry/mudroom area and the garage. The upper level contains the living, dining, kitchen, master suite and opens to the balcony and private garden with access to a roof terrace via a cantilevered steel stair. A small dumbwaiter shuttles wine from cellar to rooftop. A nice place to rest after skiing all day long, don’t you agree?

| Modern Home with Original Concrete Blades Façade in Australia Posted: 16 Feb 2011 12:42 AM PST The Balmain House is located in Sydney, Australia and was designed by Carter Williamson Architects. It is actually a makeover of a “dark and depressing” Victorian home which the architects turned into a bright and modern crib: The original house on the site is an 1860s timber cottage sourced, sawn and constructed from local timber. It was little changed when we got it. A L+EC ruling had virtually made it a heritage item, which came with court-defined planning concessions. The design is for a new building to sit sympathetically behind and recessive from the original cottage. The new building touches the old through a light, small connection that locates a gothic-like courtyard and the front door. The square ground floor houses the kitchen, living and dining rooms. Large voids puncture the upper level plan, organizing the space between bedroom, study and library. The voids spatially organise the ground plan defining the kitchen, dining and circulation. Do you think this project inspires enough “warmth” (as requested in the brief by the owners)? (Photography by Brett Boardman)
