| Incredible Black&White Hand Drawn Illusions by Charlotte Mann Posted: 28 Jan 2011 04:53 AM PST Why should walls remain static and dull? On Freshome we try to gather a large variety of solutions that can transform a regular interior into a vivid work of art. For today we have a special suggestion. Charlotte Mann is a talented British artist who became famous due to her fascinating wall drawings and drawn room installations. Her work includes drawings of “rooms in room”, created with a black market on a white background. The scenes are characterized by a large density in details and- as one can see in the photos- by a scale of 1:1. Charlotte not only creates art installations for shows and presentations, but is also involved in several other projects (in 2008 she created wall drawings for the School of Life class room). From where we’re standing, her work looks absolutely amazing. We featured this post on our blog, as we believe this idea could be taken forward and applied to home decors. So Freshome readers, bring out your markers and put that creativity to work!

| Uncommon Bookcase Featuring a Levitating Sofa Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:46 AM PST Here is a wonderful alternative for a reading corner. Found on DigsDigs, the Ramsa sofa was created by designer Younes Duret consists of a beautiful couch that seems to levitate over a miniature bookcase. The uncommon design is very practical, as it makes it possible for a reader to easily access a wide range of his or her favorite books while not even having to stand up. But functionality is not this sofa’s only feature. With a stylish wooden finish, Ramsa is also of great aesthetic effect and it can be integrated in a modern living room, leading to incredible visual results. We tried really hard and in the end we managed to find a small downside to this otherwise fascinating furniture piece: the fact that the books always have to be in order. But this could also be looked at as an advantage. After all, there are plenty of passionate readers who have a tendency to ignore tidiness and this design is their chance to become organized.

| Incredible Residence with Unequalled Architectural Details Posted: 28 Jan 2011 12:55 AM PST Johannesburg, South Africa is the beautiful setting for this next amazing architectural masterpiece. Designed by Nico Van Der Meulen Architects, this 1,400 sqm residence in Eccleston Rd, Bryanston, stands tall on a sloped terrain, which was the reason for constructing a large basement as a base for the structure on the lower side of the building. Cantilevering volumes and a concrete beam support the visual appeal alongside the rust-like intrusions and portions clad with unfilled travertine. A koy pond guards the entrance, while an illuminated glass staircase can be seen through immense windows. The lounge is a double story space punctured by a 4 meter long fireplace. On the other side, the dining room can be seen and an open kitchen connects the two rooms. Features like a tennis court, a raised swimming pool or the gym and spa facilities transform this unequaled building into a luxurious residence. A wine cellar makes the picture perfect home whole, while the pyjama lounge with its own kitchenette on the first floor accentuates the fact that this is where the children’s suites are. The master bedroom opens on to a panoramic terrace, like all the other bedrooms and lounges of the house do. The north orientation allows plenty of sunshine and natural ventilation. Just think how it would be like not to have time to enjoy all the cool features of this house.

| Contemporary, Bright and Dynamic Offices for Lance Armstrong Foundation Posted: 27 Jan 2011 12:20 PM PST The Lance Armstrong Foundation received a recognition of their hard work when they went from leasing space in a corporate office building to having their own offices in the 1950s Gulf Coast Paper Co. warehouse in East Austin, Texas. Modern and full of energy, the new headquarters was designed by Lake Flato Architects and The Bommarito Group. The building was flooded by light from two angles, the facade and the roof, brightening up the creative space used by 62 people that work here. The renovated rectangular building features office space, meeting rooms, dining facilities, an in-house gymnasium, open-air courtyard, and parking. With a LEED Gold certification, the 2010 Austin Constructor Annual Award, Outstanding Construction Award and the 2010 Texas Society of Architects / AIA Design Award, the architecture and features of the building will bring joy, organization and visual contentment to the people working here and to the visitors. The offices look like an organized yet creative indoors neighborhood, filled with dynamicity, don’t you think?

| Striking Reupholstered Armchair with Colourful Good Luck Charms Posted: 27 Jan 2011 09:18 AM PST The London based design studio 20age rekindled this old chair’s flame. A vintage armchair stands at the base of this colourful reconstruction, proving once again that fresh design can reconstruct almost anything. We can consider this chair to be very lucky: once because it was saved with the help of a beautiful fabric and second because the strings that make up the back side of the armchair are considered to be lucky charms in Brazil. The strings are supposed to be tied to the wrist with three knots for good luck and for each knot, you should make a wish. Found on Design Milk, the lovely armchair, named Bahia Chair, is reupholstered in yellow velvet cord and yellow and green checked cotton and has 5,000 Brazilian ribbons attached to the back side. We can clearly see the Brazilian and English heritage of the designers, Emma Phelps and Mauricio Varlotta.

| Imposing Aztec Serpent Office Building in France Posted: 27 Jan 2011 08:14 AM PST Aztec Serpent Office Building was designed by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture and is located close to the main train station in Saint-Etienne, France. The architecture of this building is daring and original, not to mention highly contemporary. According to French studio Manuelle Gautrand Architecture, the project is like a large 'Aztec serpent' rising on the lot. Its body has three identical outer faces, and an underside that is different: a skin of silvery transparent scales, and a bright yellow 'throat,’ shiny and opaque. As reported by My Modern Met, a courtyard plays the central element of the structure, as the building loops around it. Parts of the imposing architecture project are cantilevered, which gives it a bold, spectacular appearance. The contrast between the rectangular windows and the yellow walls is of great visual effect. (Photo credit: Philippe Ruault)
