Spectacular Architecture Integrated in An Exotic Hawaiian Environment Posted: 26 Jan 2011 05:42 AM PST Kona Residence is a home displaying a dramatic and intriguing architecture in Hawaii. Its location couldn’t be more privileged, as the home is not far from the ocean while at the same time having unobstructed views of the surrounding volcanic mountains. According to TwistedSifter, this stunning building designed by Belzberg Architects was completed in 2010 and stretches over a surface of 8,000 sq ft (743 sq m), Here is more information regarding the structure of the residence from the architects: The program is arranged as a series of pods distributed throughout the property, each having its own unique features and view opportunities. The pods are programmatically assigned as two sleeping pods with common areas, media, master suite and main living space. A central axis becomes the organizational and focal feature for the entire house, connecting each of the pods through an exterior gallery corridor. Together with stacked and cut lava rock, the two materials form a historically driven medium embedded in Hawaiian tradition. 3-D modeling and digital fabrication through CNC machinery was incorporated to further enhance traditional elements in a contemporary arrangement. Bright and Fun Shelf Reminiscent of Summer Days Posted: 26 Jan 2011 03:45 AM PST Furniture designer Martin Gallagher created a beautiful shelf design that reminds us of the bright summer days. Inspired by the eternal movement of the waves, this undulating concept arises from the need of having a dynamic design that not only keeps us thinking happy thoughts, but is also highly functional and modern. Made from birch plywood, the shelf  was constructed layer by layer in order to compress each sheet for a beautiful final result: a unique block shelf that persuades you to use it every day. The exterior of the block has natural colours, but the interior wave is available in colorful finishes to brighten up the adjacent space or clear lacquer for a more formal appearance. Sinks have reinvented themselves and the materials, shapes, and even the way water flows in and out of them now enhances your room, as opposed to being forgotten about with the plumbing pipes. Inspirational Make Over: Old Furniture Turned Into Modern Chest of Drawers Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:29 AM PST Joanne Kelly from Think Contemporary recently sent us an original design project. Here is her description:  “When I found this tallboy stashed away in the back of my grandmothers loft in Galway, I couldn’t believe my luck. I knew instantly that myself and Anthony could do something amazing with it. We wanted to create something completely different using a new material. After lots of research we decided to go down the road of using printed vinyls, which has now started to become a trademark for Think Contemporary. Then all we had to do was restore and upcycle this beautiful piece. I stripped away the old finish using methylated spirits and steel wool. Then it was a matter of removing the handles and applying the first undercoat. Once the undercoat was dry, I sanded it down using a low grade sandpaper and applied a second undercoat. This gave a good base for the top coat. The next step was to apply a satin finish water-based paint, allowing it to dry before sanding it again and then giving it a second coat. After leaving the paint to dry for a couple of days, I then applied the vinyl to the front for a quirky effect. I sprayed the original handles with gold paint and reused them. ” Be sure to check out the last photo for an image of how this tallboy looked before the conversion. Comfortable and Minimalist Cube-Shaped Home with Modern Features Posted: 26 Jan 2011 12:22 AM PST Today we showcase an interesting residence, which stands at the border between functionality and minimalism. The inhabitant wanted to live in an open space, with enough furniture to meet all the modern living requirements, bright and comfortable. Designed by Robert Gurney Architect and built in Bethesda, Maryland, the home replaces an old, larger structure because the client wanted a space used to its full potential, instead of a cluttered home. Measuring 2,200 square feet, with an additional panoramic outdoor living space of 1,100 square feet on the flat roof, the cube shaped home takes advantage of the surrounding landscape while ensuring privacy. Found on Archdaily, the dwelling has a beautiful, modern charcoal facade that is in perfect harmony with the neighbourhood.  The interior design matches the client’s wishes: modern and de-cluttered, environmentally conscious and comfortable. Walnut flooring and white walls offer the perfect base for the modern furniture, decorations and art and complete the interiors with the same bold influence of the architect’s vision. Impressive Architectural Metamorphosis in the Hollywood Hills Posted: 25 Jan 2011 09:09 AM PST This imposing residence was designed by Michael Parks and is located in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills. There is an interesting story about this residence which makes it stand out as a testament to forward-thinking, sleek, open, airy and inviting modern architecture. After seeing a few architecture plans that were above his budget and with a good contractor on board, Parks decided to remodel the house for himself. Here is more from the official press description: Parks faced countless challenges when he purchased the house:  severe dry rot and termite damage to every area of the wood, post and beam-built house; windows that did not connect with their frames; a poor floor plan with little worthwhile useable space and only one proper bedroom; a kitchen where Parks actually put his foot through the rotted floor; poor ventilation with no insulation and an oddly shaped lot coupled with difficult hillside conditions. But Parks looked past the dwelling's numerous issues and instead saw incredible, unrealized potential. With impeccable proportions and bold geometry, Parks' design uses the strategic and artful interplay between horizontal and vertical volumes to define the home's appearance — engaging and heightening the senses of those who visit.
