Bright and Cosy Home in Australia: the Yallingup Residence

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 05:21 AM PST

Combining stone, metal, wood and glass, the Yallingup Residence was created for the enjoyment and relaxation of its inhabitants. Architects from WrightFeldhusen designed and constructed the home you are about to see below. Situated in Yallingup, in the South West corner of Western Australia, the home got its name from the location chosen for the construction. Surrounded by a green environment, the residence gets plenty of sunshine through the glass walls that act as a canvas for the hill scenery outside. Brightly coloured stone stands at the base of the construction, while the two storeys are delimited by white concrete floors and ceilings. An ordinary construction wouldn’t have looked as good in a natural landscape, but the Yallingup Residence makes the most of the available space and natural environment. Large rooms complete the exterior design by keeping the same design line and reusing the colourful stone motif we saw outside. The terrace and large sliding doors allow the formation of a healthy connection between the outside and the inside. Take a look at the pictures below and let us know what you think.

Interview: Architecture as a Way of Life with James Heimler

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 01:39 AM PST

Today we have a very special guest. James Heimler of James Heimler, Architect, Inc.(one of the leading architecture firms in California for environmentally sustainable design practices and spatial architectural planning) has an impressive experience as a general partner in both development and property management companies. He answered our interview challenge and here is the result:

  • Freshome: Can you tell us when it all started? What was your first architecture project?
  • James Heimler: I started designing in the first grade. It just came naturally for me. In first grade I designed a new home and I presented it as a floor plan – not like all the other students with their pitched roof with chimney and smoke.

SecondFloor3 Interview: Architecture as a Way of Life with James Heimler

  • Freshome: What is your favorite architecture project?
  • James Heimler: Many of Schiendler's and Frank Lloyd Wright's designs.
  • Freshome: How would you describe a common work day ?
  • James Heimler: It depends on what I am going to do that day. On a design day I am anxious, excited, nervous, and ready to get to work and resolve the issues in the design that I have been dreaming about for days.

Stairs5 Interview: Architecture as a Way of Life with James Heimler

  • Freshome: Tell us something unusual that happened in your career:
  • James Heimler: On meeting a prospective client I was told to design his custom office building, making it unique and under a $10m construction cost. This meeting lasted 10 minutes – I was given free reign.
  • Freshome: What is your favourite book/magazine on architecture?
  • James Heimler: Kindergarten Chats by Louis Sullivan.
  • Freshome: What do you find truly inspiring?
  • James Heimler: Nature and the energy force and a site.

SpiralStairs7 Interview: Architecture as a Way of Life with James Heimler

  • Freshome: What thrills you the most in your work?
  • James Heimler: Resolving a design and, later, when the project is completed, seeing the client's excitement.
  • Freshome: Hypothetically. A crazy client approaches you with a business idea. He offers you a mind blowing amount of money if you create a two level building for his bonsai (a miniature tree which he grows in a pot). He offers you an enormous budget and no guidelines. Nor is he intending on visiting much. How would your project look like?
  • James Heimler: It could be a garden cut into a hillside with interior cave like rooms accessed from within the hillside for viewing the Bonsai and meditating. This would be very organic maybe like a mixture of Japanese and Gaudi's structures.

LivingRoom1 Interview: Architecture as a Way of Life with James Heimler

  • Freshome: What project would you like create if you had no limits ?
  • James Heimler: A 2,500 person intergenerational sustainable (off the grid) community for young families and an educational center for their kids. It can then transform into an intergenerational retirement center with all the dreams I would have for my family to have when we retire including the possible health care I could need. I continue to work toward this idea now.

  • Freshome: Share something you would like the world to know about you or your ideas.
  • James Heimler: I plan for the future using my or someone else's dreams and then with my vision, passion, and reality checks I make it happen!
  • Freshome: Any advice for young designers or architects reading this interview?
  • James Heimler: Keep an open mind, explore, dream, know the rules of engagement in whatever endeavor you enter into. Be real!

Surprising Architecture with Dynamic Angular Perspectives in Tokyo

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 10:47 AM PST

Located in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, this next building was constructed with a clear concept in mind: an angular, straight forward design, perfectly describing the new century that has already begun in architecture worldwide. Rising from the middle of the neighbourhood, the structure is actually an office building for the architecture firm that built it, encompassing a world of design ideas, as well as light and space manipulation. Constructed by Architect Label Xain (A.L.X.), the Sorte House is made from reinforced concrete and glazing. The four-storey building uses pure white to create a canvas for the architectural elements in order to express the minimalism surrounding its existence. The light plays with the walls during the day, as a dynamic expression of the building’s character. Asymmetrical shapes combine to form an interesting structure: the facade seems linear and simple compared to the intricate interiors. This is a structure filled with character, which was designed to be looked at from every angle, but never analyzed. Via Yatzer

  • Make your space multifunctional: Whether you live in a one bedroom, studio, or if you just have a lot of roommates, your apartment should be able to utilize one space for several functions. Your dining room table could serve as an office for your laptop when not eating, dining table at meal time, and possibly a work surface when doing hobbies and crafts. Utilize kitchen bar area for sitting, entertaining, dining, and extra work surface space when cooking. In your living room, use futons, and sleeper sofa beds for a couch in the day, and a sleeping area at night.

  • Utilize vertical and hidden storage: In a small space vertical and hidden storage is your best friend. For storing collectibles, books, and displaying decor, utilize tall display storage, shelving over doorways, and open shelving throughout your apartment. Hidden storage under beds, hanging organization accessories on the back of doors, and installing vertical storage in cabinets, can drastically maximize your storage capacity. In clothing closets, hang shelving in double tiers, and at varying heights to get the most of your closet storage.
  • Use light and color to your advantage: To make your apartment look larger, let ample light into your home as much as possible. Also use light colors, neutrals, and muted tones to maximize visual space. When your home looks larger, you will feel better and more at home in your small space. Try to avoid compartmentalizing your rooms with color. Use a unifying color throughout your home, like a neutral and define spaces with accent walls or with varying hues of the same color. This will make your apartment visually read as one large space.

For the few pieces that you do have, make them special and eye catching. A beautiful headboard in your bedroom, or even an entertainment center that commands attention from all your guests, can make your apartment interiors fun and enjoyable to be in. Don't forget your walls too. Artwork, murals, and wall decals can make your walls come alive with color and life without much work. The more visually appealing your decor and furnishings, the easier it will be to remember how larger your space actually is.
