| Friendly Dental Office with Baroque Design Influences in Bucharest Posted: 21 Jan 2011 05:36 AM PST For those of you thinking of opening up a dental office, we have an interesting project for analysis today. Royal Dental is a Dental Clinic designed by Stefan Lazar & Adrian Hanas and located in Pipera, Bucharest, Romania. Here is the description we received from the project developers: Royal Dental Clinic was an ambitious project in all respects. Finding a concept to translate the idea of excellence into dental imaging was a challenge that we accepted, proposing a simple but effective solution. Combining the latest technology with experience and professionalism, we reinvented the classic style, a characteristic of boutique-like premises, thus creating a friendly ambiance. The simple chromatic design emphasizes on the elegant Baroque decoration in the reception of clients area and to an overall feeling of order n areas of management and treatment. Find it appealing enough for a dental inspection? (photos: Andi Popescu, presentation film: Catalin Balasa, concept: Razvan Savu )

| Surprising and Dynamic Transformation of a Victorian Residence Posted: 21 Jan 2011 04:18 AM PST Some time ago, we featured a beautiful house here on Freshome, where we saw how good Andrew Maynard Architects are. Today we showcase a very interesting modern home from their portfolio that has been transformed from a double-fronted Victorian house into an exciting contemporary mixture of modern design and vintage charm. You can clearly see every detail, from every corner. The extended part in the rear garden is the celebrated part of the house, contrary to the idea that the design was built to accentuate the old building. Those who have seen the interior and the backyard know that the residence is indeed a continuation of space into an open, breathing space. Architects talk about the transformation :”the house is now articulated as three masses – the original dwelling, addition and garage, each punctuated by outside space. A blurred line exists not between old and new, but inside and out“.
Eco-friendly features complete the residence’s charm: the Victorian part was completely re-floored using recycled spotted gum. In the back of the house, a concrete slab absorbs heat during the day and spreads it during the night, so the result is a constant temperature. Double glazing and quality insulation keep the home at optimum temperature. The kitchen is the central point of the house. Both residents are caterers and the bright kitchen is spiced with lime green. Even the undulating lines of the complementing addition to the Victorian dwelling reflect feminine accents enjoyed by the three ladies of the house. The renovation was meant to display a transition between old and new. Do you think the architects managed to reflect that?

| Spectacular Home with Breathtaking Panoramic Views in the Hollywood Hills Posted: 21 Jan 2011 01:42 AM PST Openhouse was designed by XTEN Architecture and has a privileged and dramatic location in the Hollywood Hills. A short description from the architects reveals that the residence appears as a strong sculptural form developed at the scale of the large site. The logic of the architecture is developed directly from these site conditions: the building follows the site contours, the interior spaces extend to embrace nature and nature extends into and throughout the house. The front, side and rear elevations of the house slide open to erase all boundaries between indoors and outdoors, connecting the spaces to gardens on both levels. The exterior of the building is bold and eye-catching, featuring unexpected volumes and angles of sight. Once inside, one can enjoy unique views of the glamorous city below while taking advantage of the best modern living conditions. The minimalist and elegant interior design turns this home into a tasteful and inspiring oasis of relaxation.

| The Living Kitchen Show, Cologne, Germany 2011 Posted: 21 Jan 2011 12:22 AM PST As most of you probably already know, the Living Kitchen Show 2011 is currently taking place in Cologne, Germany 2011. We received a great review of the first day of the international fair from Susan Serra, CKD, author of The Kitchen Designer blog which we decided to share below. (photo credits: Susan Serra) The new international kitchen show, a trade fair focusing on everything to do with the kitchen, opened its doors. As a US kitchen designer, I was struck by the size of the displays (they are large!) and the quality of design and innovation. A trip into a fantasy world of kitchens! Although I have only seen part of the show, here are some observations that stand out for me. Texture in cabinets and countertops is hot! Often seen in patterns of “nature”, but sometimes fantasy, particularly in countertops, the look is fresh! Here is one example of a glass countertop, by Lechner
The color is “Truffle” or mushroom, or greige, and it’s e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e! Seen in on cabinetry, countertops, walls, flooring, in any variation. It’s a beautiful neutral and puts me into a peaceful state just looking at it.
Appliances do what you NEED them to do. All the buzz surrounding Gaggenau’s booth was focused on its new cooktop, where one can put up to four pots ANYWHERE on the cooktop and the induction cooktop will heat in response to its placement! The image shows the pots nearly off the cooktop to illustrate the lack of burner locations. I want one of those!

| Complex Sustainable Residence in Georgia, USA: The RainShine House Posted: 20 Jan 2011 08:05 AM PST The RainShine House was designed by Architect Robert M. Cain and is located in Decatur, Georgia, USA. The impressive two-storey home stretches over an area of 2800 square feet and features three bedrooms and 3-1/2 bathrooms. According to the official description, RainShine was given this name due to key design characteristics: The living room, dining, kitchen and guest bedrooms are sheltered by a unique butterfly roof structured with steel beams spanned by exposed 1- 1/2" tongue-and-groove wood decking. The roof floats above continuous clerestories allowing light to flood into the interior. Light shelves around the clerestory sills bounce and diffuse natural light throughout the interior. The butterfly roof is designed to capture rainfall for a rain harvest system located in the basement (Rain) and is oriented to maximize southern exposure for a roof mounted photovoltaic system (Shine). The butterfly design, with it's inverted gable, simplifies rainwater collection, eliminates extensive gutter and downspout systems and the associated maintenance headaches common in conventional gabled or hip roofed homes. And, you know how we can conceal nearly every appliance except ovens? This may be the year of ovens behind doors – I’ve seen this over and over on the show floor and here are two images which show this look – all in keeping with a more simple, streamlined, kitchen design.
