| Magnificent Beach Home in Maui, a Tribute to Living Large Posted: 12 Jan 2011 03:19 AM PST There aren’t a lot of homes that can take pride in having an ocean for their back yard. This opulent Kaanapali estate is located near the Pacific Ocean and has breathtaking beach views. The residence consists of 11, 000 square feet of living space and houses two master suites, six guest rooms, a media room, library, home office and separate caretaker’s quarters. It is a mind-blowing residence not only in size, but also in location and design. We particularly enjoy the landscape architecture elements which do a great job in welcoming the building’s inhabitants and guests. The interior design is a harmonious mix of modern details together with more traditional ones. Other home “additions” include a oceanfront pool, a Jacuzzi, a yoga pavilion and an exercise room. The 8 bedroom residence is being sold online here, for $ 23,800,000 ! We are looking forward to your likes and dislikes. – via Luxury Retreats

| Modern and Practical Addition to a Seattle Brick Bungalow Posted: 12 Jan 2011 01:53 AM PST Architecture studio Shed has sent us one of their projects, a contemporary addition to a small brick home. Here is a brief description of the project together with some photos of their work: “The owners of this one story Seattle brick bungalow needed more space for their growing family. They also wanted to open up their house to the backyard, but modifying existing brick walls and adding new ones is expensive. To meet these needs, the design solution for the addition was conceived as a metal box, just large enough to contain the new bedrooms and baths, placed on top of the house and set back to minimize the impact on the existing roof and rooms below. It extends beyond the existing footprint at the back of the house to shelter a new deck and full height corner glazing that connects the kitchen to the backyard. Salvaged bricks from this opening and the demolished back porch were used to build a seat wall that reinforces circulation and serves as a remembrance of the porch.” We are looking forward to your opinions regarding this home extension.

| How to Organize a Kid’s Playroom Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:25 AM PST A designated space in your home that kids can call their own is the ultimate enjoyment for a playroom. From the toys, to the unlimited supply of interactive games and supplies, the playroom is a sanctuary for kids! The question becomes for the parents – Is it a complete nightmare cleaning and organizing the playroom? If you answered yes, you're not alone. Parent's often neglect the playroom for organization in fear that it won't last because of the nature of the room. Read on to see how organization will help your kids find things, and clean up time will actually work!
o Open floor space area: Give kids an area where they can spread out toys, roll around and have fun. Place an area carpet in this area and house larger toys adjacent in a closet where there is easy access. The larger the room, the larger this area should be. o Quiet area: This area can consist of a small table, chairs adjacent to bookshelves, puzzles and other 'quiet' time activities. Quiet areas should have an area for coloring, craft projects or other activities that requires children to sit down. o Noisy area: This area can be adjacent to the open floor space area. Small push toys and noisy activities should have toy bins close by in which kids can access on their own. Organize activity area per the age of your child.
Who says the playroom has to always be messy!? Playrooms are a place for creativity, fun and growth. Your child will learn better in an organized but free access environment. The sky is the limit when it comes to laying out a playroom. Depending on the activities your child enjoys and the size of the room let your organizing imagination run wild! | Kitchen Range Hood Turned Into Work of Art Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:17 PM PST Here is an incredibly creative idea for all of you out there interested in how to make your kitchen look original and appealing. This unusual range hood was developed by architects Lhoas & Lhoas as part of an interior design project in Brussels. The otherwise common practical kitchen object was reinvented and transformed into a beautiful abstract sculpture. Having an elegant, minimalist shape and a white finish, the design contrasts nicely with the rest of the of the kitchen furniture and manages to draw attention. We salute this idea, as we consider it the beginning of many other similar unique projects. Who knows? Maybe in just a few years, all kitchen object as we know them will have a completely different shape.- via Swiss Miss

| Beautiful Mountain Home Made “Modern” with Cable Railings Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:24 AM PST We recently received an interesting architecture project from Keuka Studios, a company specialized in producing stair railings. Here is the full description they sent us: “Although some would argue that the words rustic and modern should not belong in the same sentence, this modern rustic Montana home is proof that the two can coexist, beautifully. Ample use of wood and stone help the home blend nicely with the heavily wood lot. Bold geometry was carefully combined with traditional log home elements in a way that is sensitive to the environment. Sustainable materials were selected wherever possible. Soaring floor to ceiling glass like a movie screen, establish an intimate connection with the natural environment beyond. Curved decks and balconies help soften the transition to the landscape while the extensive use of curved cable railings from Keuka Studios contribute to a unique personality.
The cable balusters were selected as they minimally intrude on the natural views. Crossing the glass floor walkway is like a strolling through a national park on your way to relax with a good book. The balcony offers a unique vantage point to take in the breathtaking views. On close inspection, the craftsmanship of the builder Hoyt Homes is evident though every aspect of this airy mountain home from the massive stone fireplace to the unique handrail treatment on the rustic stairway.”
