How to Decorate your Tree without Traditional Ornaments

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 04:00 AM PST

Depending on your household traditions, your Christmas tree ornaments could be the ones that have been passed down through generations, or ones that you picked up from the corner store! Either way tree ornaments can represent all that you love about Christmas without being traditional. While Christmas ball ornaments are beautiful, how about ideas for ornaments which represent your family, your kid's, a hobby, or even a past time that you love? Here are ways to decorate your tree without using traditional ornaments.

  • Festive foods: Believe it or not, food items make great ornaments! From baked cookies to homemade candy ornaments, festive foods that are part of your family's Christmas traditions are personalized and yummy looking! Visit your local craft store and ask for a spray-on preserver or paint-on liquid lacquer that can be brushed on the food to preserve it. Gingerbread, marshmallows, and ribbon candy can be strung into beautiful ornaments that will add whimsy to your tree.
  • Non-traditional colors: Similarly to our post about decorating your home without the traditional red, ornaments can be hot pink to turquoise! Look around your home and fit your ornament color scheme into your décor. Choose colors from your furniture, walls, or even a piece of art work and draw that theme into hand crafted ornaments or find matching ribbon and tie bows around your Christmas tree branches.

  • Family memories: Consider using small family pictures, kid's school arts and crafts projects, or even seashells from your last family vacation to the beach for ornaments. Family mementos make beautiful ornaments and they give your tree a purpose: a place to display all that your family holds dear. Start a family tradition and make an ornament each year that represents the past year. You will be surprised how fun it will be each year to bring out memories when decorating the next year's tree.

  • Everyday household items: Do you have collections of items around your home that you can't think of what to do with? Safety pins, clothes pins, buttons, and even rocks and pine cones can make beautiful holiday ornaments. Online magazines and home improvement stores always have a wide array of Christmas craft ideas in books, workshops, and do it yourself tutorials online. If you have a personal connection to an item, you may be able to turn it into an ornament! Have a computer geek in the family? Why not give them an ornament made from computer keys!?

Holiday ornaments are a tradition, as is the Christmas tree itself. See if you can be unique this year in your festive decorating, and consider nontraditional ornaments. While the classic ornaments can still be used as background, consider unique ornaments to take center stage on your tree. Try having each family member create an ornament for themselves or for another family member. How exciting your tree will look each year when it is a potpourri of eclectic ornaments and styles.

Oceanfront Home Invaded by Color: Montauk Residence

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

Montauk Residence was designed by Pentagram Architects and is located in Montauk, New York. The project consists of two separate buildings with distinct personalities: the main house and the guest house. Each of them has a generous outdoor area which takes full advantage of the closeness of the ocean. Especially built for a young couple (a film producer and a writer), the residence houses a writer's studio which is located on the roof of the main house and an amazing looking home theater in the basement (the red room in the photos below). Here is more information from the architects about the challenges that came with building this project : The realization of such a remarkably transparent and open house, one that literally opens to the outside with enormous sliding glass walls, is quite a technical feat in an environment as harsh as the northern Atlantic shore. The radiant heated floors, geothermal wells, highly engineered glass and doors, along with fine construction tolerances contribute to the efficiency and comfort these houses offer in all seasons.  Be sure to take a close look at the photos below for a better understanding of this dazzling architecture performance.

Most Expensive English Furniture Piece Ever : $5,980,438!

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:39 AM PST

The Harrington Commode is officially the most expensive English furniture item after being sold in an auction on the 7th of December by Sotheby’s London for the whooping price of £3,793,250 ($5,980,438). The cabinet is said to belong to furniture designer Thomas Chippendale and be about 240 years old. According to Luxist, the battle over the piece lasted for 15 minutes and the final price was three times its estimate. Henry House, the auctioneer who conducted and dynamized the sale, declared for the press: “This remarkable commode which is outstandingly beautiful in both form and condition, was keenly contested by five bidders, the final price demonstrating true demand in the market for items of real quality, and one which I feel is justly deserved for an item that has been an honour to sell.” ( Photos by Sotheby’s )

How to Make Wood Accents Beautify your Home

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:10 AM PST

Have you ever walked into a room and seen how wood crown molding makes the room feel more grand and luxurious? Even a simple beadboard or wood wainscoting can transform your room from boring to appealing in an instant. If you are looking for ways to beautify your space, adding wood accents can add a formality or a needed style to your home. If you're looking to buy or sell a home, wood accents can add value to your home, and boost buyer appeal above your competition.

  • Crown molding and chair rails: Wood trim which is placed at the top of the ceiling or at the top of furniture pieces is called crown molding. It comes in various profiles and widths and can be traditionally ornate or use simple lines. Chair rails are typically placed horizontally along the wall at a height that a chair would rub up against the wall. Similarly to crown molding, chair rails come in various widths and profiles. Chair rails can divide the wall with color or textures.

  • Transition pieces between materials: The original intent of wood trim is to cover up the transition between different materials in your home. Where the floor and wall meets, base trim is used. Where a window/door edge meets the wall, a side wood trim is used. Depending on your home décor style, choose a combination of trim pieces to make a dominant cornice on your fireplace mantle, or a minimal thin baseboard piece for a clean, simple detail. The transition between materials shouldn't be harsh, instead should be decorated beautifully with trim.
  • Exterior wood details: Wood detailing on your home shouldn't only be reserved for the interior! Wood trim is especially beautiful on the exterior of your home, especially when fine detail has been added. Traditional and historical homes are known for their wood trim, and if you own an older home, the wood detailing is what makes your home special. If you're thinking of upgrading the exterior of your home, consider adding wood shutters, trim, corbels, dentils and other specialty trim pieces.

  • Contrast trim with surroundings: While typically white or bone colored trim is used on the interior of homes, natural wood stains and darker color trim is a great way to add contrast to your room. Choose a wood stain color that blends well with your furniture, wood floors, and/or decorative wood in your space. For a dynamic touch, add darker trim to light colored walls and ceilings to add visual interest.

Wood trim pieces come in a variety of species and grades. Adding wood trim is a great do it yourself project that will help you gain a new appreciation for your home when you complete. Consider getting help from a carpenter or home improvement store representative for tips and tricks for cutting and installing wood trim on your own. Get inspiration from home décor magazines and see how your home will come alive, and can boost its resale value! Now that's a win-win scenario.

Freshome readers tell us if you have upgraded your home with wood trim pieces. If so, which ones have given you the most bang for your buck? We'd love to hear your comments!

Zen-Like Cube Shaped Study Crib in the Catskill Mountains

Posted: 12 Dec 2010 10:34 AM PST

Scholar’s Library was designed by architect Peter Gluck and is located in the Catskill Mountains, northwest of New York, USA. This unusual building accommodates over 10 000 books belonging to the architect and his wife, a scholar of Japanese history. You can look at the incredible looking studying refuge as a 20 feet cube filled with knowledge. While the ground floor has no windows as it was especially developed for storing books, the upper level is open towards the inspiring natural environment. The large windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding forest and contribute to creating a charming retreat, perfect for studying and relaxation. There is plenty of space within the beautiful studio, enough to shelter a comfy sofa, work spaces and bookshelves.  Could you imagine a better office? ( Photos by Paul Warchol )
