| Modern Monolithic Home With Fascinating Interiors in Brazil Posted: 29 Nov 2010 07:16 AM PST Casa Mirante Do Horto was designed by Flavio Castro and dominates its surroundings in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The main purpose of the project was to maximize the living surface while creating flexible areas and a good indoor/outdoor connection. The exterior of the building resembles a giant monolith with glass breaches all around. The facade is truly imposing and consists of large windows camouflaged by wooden screens. The garage is located below. On the opposite side there is a charming opening towards a small outdoor area for barbecue and socializing. The interiors are highly contemporary and diverse, housing impressive art decorations, aquariums and beautiful wooden furniture which creates a warm atmosphere. We particularly like the roof of the home which we consider to be a perfect place for relaxation and/or entertainment. What other details did you capture?

| Exciting New Look for England’s Dover Esplanade by Tonkin Liu Posted: 29 Nov 2010 05:48 AM PST Since Dover Esplanade in Kent, England was in need of a re-design that would refresh the existing sea front and connect it to the city, London-based design studio Tonkin Liu took a stand and came up with an exciting project. Here is a description from the architects: “The Dover Esplanade harnesses the architectural language of Dover’s identity; the gentle nature of waves on the sheltered beach, the rhythmical sweep of the Georgian Seafront Terrace and the undulating topography of the White Cliffs of Dover. The creation of three new waves brings a new interactive dynamism to esplanade: Lifting Wave, Resting Wave and Lighting Wave. The three waves each make contextual reference to place, responding to the environmental conditions of the seafront location; each fulfill social tasks in the form of physical provision and through psychological association; each explore themes at the scale of the city and at the fine scale of construction detail. By looking for inspiration in the context of Dover as well as the broader context of the sea, and by asking people and the place “what it wanted to be?” Tonkin Liu have added something particular to the public realm.” Increased attractiveness of the sea front, more public spaces for relaxation and further opportunities for the development of local business are just some of the immediate benefits that this project brings.

Some of them save space in the room because a designer created a functional design that would not only deal with your problem of having too little room for a desk but also look incredible in that small space. It all depends on your taste and needs, so enjoy the next 42 desk designs that we fell in love with. 1. The Covet Desk This is one of the best desk designs when it comes to storage space. The Covet Desk by Shin Azumi holds stacks of paper and files in a neat compartment under the desk, helping you clear all the clutter on the desks` surface. Even if underneath the desk there are files and folders, this is not an impediment for a comfortable seating experience.
2. The Reindeer Desk Gracefully resembling the shape of a deer, the Reindeer Desk by Alex Kozynets inspires purity and dynamicity. 5. The Treasury Table This is a special desk – it`s equipped with different sized drawers (from small to A2 format) and a translucent mat surfaced glass desk that keeps your things hidden underneath. Designers from Process created this versatile desk to be used in many situations: it can be a desk or a working station or even a place to keep tools in the garage.
6. The Wave Desk Robert Brou, designer and craftsman, created the undulating Wave Desk with the help of a new technique of slicing the wood. Two towers of sliced wood support a large poplar surface. Drawers and a pull out work surface were built in the design.
7. The Villa Rose Desk Designer Francois Azambourg created this black-stained solid oak desk with minimalist lines. Beautiful features like the single solid walnut storage niche and the hand-veneered edges of the legs speak about the need to minimize materials while maximizing the design.
8. The Max Ingrand Desk French designer and artist Max Ingrand created this combination of art and functional design back in 1966. Still looking modern, the Max Ingrand Desk consists of a single continuous form bended into a whole seat-inclusive workstation. The stainless steel from which it was made gives it an industrial-chic look and places this desk ahead of its time.
9. The Luna Desk The next stylish and contemporary desk from Italian company Uffix, named Luna, is an interesting concept with futuristic lines and a courageous approach to desk design. Luna is a desk that, due to its design, can be placed in the middle of the room and impress anyone with its design.
10. The Life Desk This desk was born out of the desire to minimize the danger of hiding under a desk during an earthquake. Designer Haishan Deng wanted to create a desk based on the “Triangle of Life” principle that would be able to protect people in case of an earthquake. Made from high strength steel and nylon board, it also has a side structure made from molten steel.
11. Le Orchidee Desk Astonishing in every detail, Marc Fish`s Le Orchidee Desk was inspired by a desk with the same name from Musee d`Orsay. What seems to be a seamless tambour roll top is actually made from veneered canvas layered upon strips of wood.
12. The Kkanapetko Desk A desk that transforms from a tiny working surface into a two or three person workstation. Versatility stands at the base of this design by Krassi Dimitrov. With 3 drawers on either side, a drawer for printer/scanner, extendable cable and stereo speakers to connect your music players, the KKanapetko Desk unfolds for more work space and has cool features that make it awesome.
13. The Track Desk Based on an open framed ash structure that provides support for various folded steel doors, shelves and surfaces, the Track Desk designed by Mark Holmes is a contemporary desk that gives a playful vibe. The designer says: “The idea of folded metal shelves and doors backed with felt, sliding smoothly over the bars of an open timber frame seemed a delightfully simple solution.”
14. The Airia Desk This design created by Kaiju Studios has a beautiful shape, perfect for any room, even a teen room: “The desk features a primary work surface and an elevated rear peripheral surface, which encloses a space for cable management. In the large central drawer are three removable cork-lined trays.” The white legs contrast with the wooden surface to give it a contemporary look.
15. The OneLessDesk A simple, yet highly functional desk created by Heckler Design offers an interesting new way to look at furniture design. The OneLessDesk is part of the OneLessOffice suite of products and is based on the idea that you don`t need as much space as you used to when technology was not this advanced. Just pop it under for more space in the room!
16. The Lane Desk This desk is based on clarity and functionality. The Lane Desk, designed by Jehs and Laub, seems to be made from one single piece of solid wood and a drawer unit. The modular storage unit supports the main structure and offers a contrasting design that is also functional.
17. The Briefcase Desk This is a beautiful interpretation of a desk made from recycled briefcases. The Briefcase Desk is beautiful but also functional. The briefcases that make up this desk are actually drawers so it is not that different from any other desk. Leather briefcases were turned into various size storage spaces and the whole design has an artistic feel to it.
18. The Crocodile Leather Desk This design is one of the most elegant made from crocodile leather. For those who don`t mind genuine leather, the handcrafted Crocodile Leather Desk by Italian furniture designer Sabino Aprile is the perfectly elegant addition to an office. The Novanta Desk Inspired by straight lines and simple elements and created from usual materials, like MDF, aluminium and perforated metal, the Novanta Desk by designer Luke Riggall is a desk for the masses. Mahogany wood and faux leather were used to build it and a beautiful design makes the StudioDesk a desirable piece of furniture.
21. The Level Desk This is a strong, masculine design that stands out through its very own simplicity and adds elegance and style to the room in which it is placed. Gabriel Teixidó designed the Level Desk for Spanish company AG Land 14. Contemporary forms were created through traditional craftsmanship, making this desk a jewel for a strong individual.
22. The Off-the-wall Desk A simple method for space saving – the Off-the-wall Desk – was designed by MASH Studios and is part of a collection entitled The LAX Series. The desk attached to the wall makes legs useless and gives an alternative for small spaces. It also looks great and has a sliding part that hides the drawers.
23. The Baobab Desk Colourful and pretty, this desk breaks the monotony with its undulating design and modern shape. It was designed by Philippe Stark for Vitra. 28. The K Workstation MisoSoup are the creators of this space saving home office design. Named K Workstation, the desk is made from a single strip of curved wood that wraps up on the wall and transforms into shelves. Perfect for crowded spaces, the desk uses little space but looks gorgeous. The bamboo from which it is made of gives this desk sustainability and elegance of curvature.
29. The Drawer Bag With its funny name, the Drawer Bag is a beautiful desk that has 3 spaces for drawers which have been replaced with briefcases. Designer Jung-Ah Kim concocted this concept of a desk with pieces that you can take home. Unusual to say the least, it does look like something I would want in my home.
30. The Hideaway Desk and Chair This is a desk that I`m proud of. It comes from MTI Impex, a Romanian based furniture developer. It looks like a cube that can be opened to reveal a desk and a chair. Perfect for small spaces, the Hideaway Desk and Chair is made from solid wood and has a beautiful, natural colour.
31.The Slimdesk Designer Manuelsaez turned an idea into a functional and sleek desk design. The top surface retracts to reveal storage space, instead of having drawers in which to keep things. A power strip and USB ports are hidden in one of the hollow legs. Simply beautiful, the desk makes up for the lack of drawers with ingenious features.
32.The Omega Desk Atomare architecture and design created the Omega Desk from one single piece of bend surface. The two colours that compose the beauty of the desk are white and orange. It has two storage spaces underneath for storing things but the minimalist design doesn`t quite take any interference with clutter.
33. The Aura Desk This is quite an elegant and contemporary design for an office desk. Designed by Alexander Petrov, the Aura Desk is made from a bend surface which goes right underneath the desk, supporting the three drawers. The pale yellow goes beautifully with the aluminium accessories.
34. The Kinzo Air Table Kinzo Architecture played with futuristic shapes to give this particular desk its form and visual appeal. An angular design gives it the appearance of a minimalist space ship. Sharp edges and a clean design, combined with the purity of white, gives the Kinzo Air Table its charm. Equipped with a hole for cables, the desk works as a single piece or it can double to become two desks.
35.The Bureau Designer Martin Holzapfel created a desk that is both a work surface and a series of shelves, depending on the owner`s desire. Many things like files and folders, books, office supplies, can be hidden inside the desk. It has a beautiful grey colour and it`s not very pretentious, so it fits perfectly in a home office.
36. The WA Desk Designers Piero Lissoni and Marc Krusin created a very versatile desk for Knoll International. The word “Wa” means harmony and this is exactly what the desk represents. An entire range of furniture can be linked to this desk, creating an office design where the owner can play with shapes anytime, rearranging how it all looks. Ergonomic accessories called “soft parts” soften the interface between the user and the work surface.
37. Xcetera Desk Designed by Basten Leijh, of Bieijh concepts & design, the Xcetera Desk is made from recycled wood and has recyclable steel components. A big “X” marks the two ends of the desk and all the lines of Xcetera are rounded once they reach a corner.
38. The I-Con Desk The I-Con Desk by Arco has a solid wood (oak or American walnut) work surface, while the legs are made from aluminium. The rounded detailing of this desk can be also found in the accessory that is available for it – a container with three drawers. A seamless drawer adds to the contemporary feel of this desk and puts this visual accent in the spotlight.
39. The Kidney Shaped Desk With its weird name, The Kidney Shaped Desk is actually an elegant addition to any office. Designer John Wiggers explains his inspiration:”The curvilinear shape and exacting dimensions of this award-winning desk are carefully proportioned to be consistent with the holistic design principles of Feng Shui and the Vastu Shastra of the ancient Vedic tradition in India.”
40. The VU.VU.VU. Computer Desk Designed by Ballabio – Elli, the VU.VU.VU. Computer Desk is made from multi-layer plywood. A suspended wood structure is prepared to store your PC and the desk also has CD/CDRom/DVD space and extractable drawer for PC keyboard. A practical desk, the VU.VU.VU comes in wenge and oak wood, with a chromed aluminium base structure.
