The Perforated House : A Statement of Individuality in Australia Posted: 20 Nov 2010 06:45 AM PST An outstanding facade stands between this home and the rest of the world. This Australian residence by Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD) is the living proof that architecture is a dynamic area, that evolves together with good ideas and goes beyond the known barriers. The most expensive feature of this home is the front facade – dominated by perforated steel screens. From inside, the view is not obstructed and on the outside it looks different from any other home. Inside, the open air living space allows the sun to warm up the north side while the south side, which is also the front of the house, allows a view of the neighbourhood. The built space is an area of 5.5×14.4m between two Victorian houses, in Brunswick, Victoria. The second floor is entirely covered by bluestone flooring. Even the backside of the home, where the kids can enjoy sunshine in a small courtyard, is covered with bluestone, but also has a big, colourful mural to break the monotony. The first floor is actually where the 2 bedrooms and bathrooms are situated, unlike the usual house arranjament. The whole house design is a statement: “To us, this project is a platform to establish a critical dialogue within our built environment; to raise questions as much as to find solutions.(…)the external facade could be experienced internally and is also a multi functional device that constantly transforms the built form from solid to void, from private to public, from opaque to translucent.“ Here you can see a video presentation of the beautiful Perforate House:

Fresh Furniture Collection Combining Elegance and Creativity Posted: 20 Nov 2010 03:16 AM PST Created by Italian designers Doriana Fuksas and Massimiliano Fuksas, the Mumbai Furniture Collection gathers gorgeous contemporary office furniture in one creative set. An executive table, a low sideboard and a taller cabinet form the collection. The desk is made from two sheets of plywood surrounding a lattice structure made of laser cut steel. Round corners give each piece of furniture an elegant and modern look, while the veneered surfaces and the visible edge of the plywood have a transparent polyurethane semi-open pore finishing. The name of the collection represents “something new, lively and innovative like the vibrant city Mumbai in India“, says Doriana Fuksas in an interview. Beautifully crafted, the three furniture items in the collection share the same design lines, but the desk is actually made using a unique technique that folded the plywood to the limits of the material’s capacity, creating an ingenious desk design. The legs of the cabinets make them look like speech bubbles – a creative way to use playfulness in the design.

Spectacular Blend of Nature & Living: The Pierre Residence Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:49 AM PST Nestled between giant boulders and overlooking the San Juan Archipelago, this fascinating looking house comes from Olson Kundig Architects and is also known as the Pierre residence. We consider this project to be a beautiful and inspiring example of how to combine natural elements with contemporary building designs. The Pierre house was constructed more or less using local materials which is also why it seems to integrate so well in its landscape. The concrete and glass create a nice contrast and together with the rocky formations form one of the most intriguing house facades we’ve seen lately. Even though the exterior could lead one to believe this residence has a modern indoor design, the furniture elements come to negate this first impression. The mix of vintage and natural details creates highly original arrangements.- via BTC

Queen Elizabeth II Stamp Rugs, a Royal Indoor Addition Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:47 AM PST We’ve showcased plenty of interesting carpet designs on Freshome, all of which had something that made them unique. The rugs we would like to present today were inspired by stamps belonging to the Royal Mail and feature Queen Elisabeth II. This unusual indoor idea belongs to Rug-Maker, a hand knotted custom rug company. In order to produce and sell these carpets, an exclusive global license to manufacture Machin's Stamp Rugs was granted by the Royal Mail. The collection is 100% handmade from 100% New Zealand wool in Nepal and comes in a rich color palette. The product is also available in various dimensions and aside from being used as a common rug, it can also be hung on the wall for an alternative look. You can purchase the stamp rug online by filling up this form- via Decoesfera
